Running head: ANDREW JACKSON AND THE CHALLENGE OF INDIAN REMOVAL Andrew Jackson and the Challenge of Indian Removal Regina Pipkins HST201 – U.S. History I Colorado State University – Global Campus Dr. Lise Namikas July 5, 2020 1 ANDREW JACKSON AND THE CHALLENGE OF INDIAN REMOVAL 2 Annotated Bibliography Smalley, R. (2001). An interview with Andrew Jackson seventh president of the United States. Johnson City, Tenn: Overmountain Press. Andrew Jackson was the president of the United States in the year 1829 to 1837 and served as a soldier in the year 1769 to 1845. There was a time he worked in the houses of the U.S. Congress. He became famous while working as a general. When he became the president of the United States, he was against corruption, and he wanted to look out for the common man. He felt that their rights were being violated, and he tried to help them and bring about unity, which was lacking. Jackson was born on 15 March 1767, and he died on 8 June 1845. His vice presidents were John Calhoun in 1829 to 1832 and Martin Buren from 1833 to1837. Cave, A. A. (2003). Abuse of power: Andrew Jackson and the Indian removal act of 1830. The Historian, 65(6), 1330-1353. In 1830 he signed the Indian Removal Act. It included talking with the southern Native American people to move from their federal territory west of the Mississippi River in exchange for white settlement of their ancestral lands. This was known as genocide since it was against a certain group of people, and it caused the death of a large group of people. The southern and northeastern people supported the act, but the natives, together with the Whig Party, were against it very much. They tried to fight this treaty, but the other group was too strong for them. Also, Cherokee attempted to fight the relocation. Still, they did not succeed, and the United States government later forcefully removed them to the west, and this movement was named the Trail of tears. ANDREW JACKSON AND THE CHALLENGE OF INDIAN REMOVAL 3 Moulder, M. A. (2011). Cherokee practice, missionary intentions: Literacy learning Cherokee among women. College early nineteenth-century Composition and Communication, 75-97. The Cherokees thought that by learning the ways of the white people, they could gain their freedom since they reasoned that they could be left alone. They embraced the ideas of white people to be civilized and be like white people. They did not want to leave their land for the white people, and that is why they decided to learn the ways of the white to impress them and left alone on their land. They welcomed the white man and even allowed them to set up schools in their area and churches. They also went as far as owning businesses and engaging in farming. They thought that the white man got power from their ability to communicate and the ability to remember things, and this made them come up with symbols that they could communicate using. Thornton, R. L. (2016). The forgotten history of North Georgia: 2016 AD. The Americas Revealed, 2016. ©2016 Thomas Jefferson is the one who came up with the idea of relocating Native American tribes from the east to the West. Unfortunately, only a few of the Cherokees and some people from the Southeastern tribes agreed to move without fighting. Georgia made a mistake of giving up their land claim, and the pressure of moving from their land grew. The U.S government agreed that if they did that, they would take the land of Cherokees and make its settlement for the whites. But the Cherokee did not show any signs of giving up their land. They had learned all the ways of white people. Thomas threatened the tribes that if they failed to move, they would not gain their independence, and they will remain under the states. ANDREW JACKSON AND THE CHALLENGE OF INDIAN REMOVAL 4 Cherokee removal. (n.d.). New Georgia Encyclopedia. https://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/historyarchaeology/cherokee-removal In 1838 fifteen thousand Cherokees were arrested and were forced to move from into primitive stockades. They were faced with challenges of lack of food, poor living conditions, and also they were faced with diseases that killed them. When they could not fight back, Chief Ross arranged for them to be relocated. They were going to relocate by walking, and this was hard. Most of them died in the process since they were hungry and the weather was very unbearable as it was winter. The Mississippi River even blocked them as it was full of ice, and they could not do anything. ANDREW JACKSON AND THE CHALLENGE OF INDIAN REMOVAL 5 References Cave, A. A. (2003). ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND CIVIL WAR

Introduction
Abraham Lincoln was the president of the united states and a member of the Whig
party, and he later joined a republican. He believed that his job as a government official was
to do what the people below him could not do for themselves. The issue of self-governance
and the potentials and difficulties arising from it was his greatest preoccupations in political
thinking. Abraham Lincoln was against slavery ever since the beginning of his career in
politics but could not make its abolition a mainstay of his policy until several years into the
war (Lincoln, 2008). The main goal that he set during the American war was to preserve the
union. He was born on February 12, 1809, and died on April 15, 1865.

Challenges of the war
The biggest challenge that Abraham Lincoln faced during his political time was
holding the union together. After he was chosen the president of the states, some of the
southern states seceded in the formation of the confederacy. The confederacy undermined the
integrity of the union, making Abraham Lincoln’s job very difficult. When the civil war
began, Abraham Lincoln had to come up with a way to win it, which was not easy. The war
was mainly fought on the southern soil, which involves defeating the south militarily. It also
included bringing the southern states into the union after he wins the fight. Abraham Lincoln
fought in the civil war because he saw it as his responsibility as a president of the states to
maintain the union (Holzer, 2006).
During Abraham Lincoln's inauguration in March 1861, seven states had already left
the union and formed their allied states of America. Lincoln responded by calling over 75,000
volunteers to work for 90 days. Four more sta...
