* A ratio is used to make comparisons between two things. You can express it in three different ways:

1. As a fraction

2. Using the word "to"

3. Using a colon ":"

Example:You have 3 squares and 4 triangles.

- The ratio of squares to triangles is: 3/4 or 3 to 4 or 3:4

- The ratio of triangles to squares is: 4/3 or 4 to 3 or 4:3

Notice that the answers are different.

* Equivalent ratios

Multiply or divide each term in the ratio by the same number.

Example:

3/4 = 6/8   because you multiply by 2. It is the same concept that equivalent fractions.
