Q1.Marie Antoinette & Children (Vigee-Lebrun) Versus Mother& Child (Cassatt)
Le Brun and Mary Cassatt captured how things materially seemed on the outside and the
emotions that emerged on the inside. Although both artists operated inside the boundaries of
their artistic cultures during an era that barred and artistically restricted women, they were
capable of capturing the affectionate bond between mother and child. Cassatt’s painting is
intimate, as is depicted by the mother softly holding the baby in her arms while suckling him.
Much like Le Brun’s piece, Cassatt’s painting has a modest background highlighting the
intimacy between the mother and child. To demonstrate the vulnerability and tenderness between
the mother and child, Cassatt employs a pastel-like color pattern. The two paintings contrast
significantly in their depiction of mothers. There is a jewelry cabinet behind Marie Antoinette to
the right of the canvas, proving that though she is with her offspring, she treasures her
materialistic items.
Moreover, her countenance lacks emotion as she loosely holds the child who looks off,
hardly recognizing its mother. Le Brun’s piece has a dark color scheme. Nonetheless, she uses
contrast to highlight the noble family that merely works further to uncover the disconnected
relationship between Marie and her children.
