Adulthood has no significant sign to show its onset. Psychologists consider 20 to 40 years
as early adulthood and 40 to 65 years as middle adulthood. People in early adulthood and middle
adulthood have different concerns and interests. This paper discusses psychological adjustments
to aging and lifestyle that occur within individuals during early and middle adulthood. The paper
includes a discussion of the social and intimate relationships evolve and change throughout the
two periods, role changes, and the immediate as well as future impact of healthy and unhealthy
habits practiced in the stages.
Ways social and intimate relationships evolve and change during early and middle
adulthood
Early and middle adulthood is influenced by many social and emotional factors, such as
interpersonal relationships and work. In early and middle adulthood, individuals find meaning
through work and family life, as recognized by Eric Erikson as intimacy vs. isolation. In early
adulthood, an individual is concerned with developing the ability to share intimacy, develop
intimate relationships, and find love. Intimacy is concerned with the sense of warmth and
closeness in a relationship. They include the desire to self-disclose, help the partner, and keep
them in one’s life. The young adults form long-term relationships that result in marriage and
families. Friendship is also important in the lives of early adults. Friends share the same interests
and involve respect, understanding, and trust (Tillman, Brewster & Holway, 2019).
According to Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development, the concept of intimacy vs.
isolation, success in their ability to develop intimate relationships leads to intimacy. In contrast,
