how do you calculate the area of a irregular shape?

We done it in class but I was off, I know it involves dropping the irregular shape

The usual method is to place a plastic grids with squares of the size you want (for example, square centimetres) on top of the required area and count the total number of squares the irregular area occupies. Usually you count the full sqaures first, then any parts that are roughly half a square.
