Sociology 1100

Principles of Sociology

STEP 1: Find a current article about a crime that has been committed within the past three

weeks. Look for language within the article that lends itself to a sociological explanation of the

deviant behavior. You should not Google “crime” or “deviance” to find a current events article

related to crime and deviance; rather, check reputable online news sources or an actual article

about a crime or deviant behavior. There are always major deviant acts each week that make the

national and local news.

STEP 2: Write a thorough summary of the article.

STEP 3: Using your sociological imagination, write an analysis of the article that connects the

main idea/s of the article to specific ideas from Marx or Mills.

Paper is to be Double-spaced

12 point Times New Roman font

I put in the summary and analysis from Marx and Mills so you can use that as a reference for step 3.

Tanya Rasha 7/23/20 Dr. Polasek Reaction Paper 2 “The Promise” by C. Wright Mills Summary According to Mills, a person’s life and the history of society go hand in hand. To understand the life of a person, one has to understand history. However, people fail to connect the trial that they face with historical changes. According to Mills, the lives of individuals and how they behave are reliant on what is going on in society. To have a better understanding of this, Mills notes on the importance of having a sociological imagination. According to Mills, sociological imagination helps people understand each other’s lifestyles, backgrounds, traditions, and beliefs. To understand imagination, one has to relate their issues with what is happening in society. Analysis "The Promise" is key because it helps understand the impact that society has on a person and how history has contributed to it. For instance, people’s behavior differs because of their religious beliefs and the values that they hold. A good example of this can be seen in the case of LGBT, and some people are of the idea that this doesn't seem right because men are supposed to CHAPTER SUMMARIES 2 be with women and women with men. I agree with the chapter material. Society influences people's actions; for instance, when making a decision, people tend to look at what is acceptable to society. This chapter helped me to look at society differently. This is because society has a great impact on people’s behavior. For instance, I can see how things going on in society affects my behavior. A good example is an ongoing movement on "Black Lives Matters" I found myself relating to the issue and noticing instances of discrimination in the society. Some of the question that I would ask from this chapter include; 1. Where does society fall when it comes to human history? 2. What structure does the society have at large? Bourgeois and proletarians by Karl Marx Summary Marx begins the Communist Manifesto by generalizing that the history of class struggles still exists. He looks at classes as groups of people that oppose each other, where one party oppresses the other. He goes further to state that the society is split into two. And he refers to one group as the Bourgeoisie and Proletariat. Bourgeoisie refers to a capitalist; the wealthy people in the society wo are owners of means of production; on the other hand, the proletariat is the working class, and they do not own any means of production. According to Marx, history was a story of class. In ancient society, those who had wealth oppressed the poor. There were discoveries and colonization of the new world in the 16th and 17th centuries, resulting in the need for new methods for production and exchange. This led to the Bourgeoisie coming up with new CHAPTER SUMMARIES 3 means of production. As technology grew, the middle class gained more wealth, destabilizing the classes. Bourgeoisie took advantage of the proletariat, where the work they did brought more wealth to the proletariat. Analysis The chapter helped me to understand what brought about social classes in society. By understanding its beginning from the 16th and 17th centuries, I can understand what I see in society today. This chapter does not conflict with my belief because it is the same thing that is happening in today’s society. There are also divisions in terms of the wealthy. Those with money can do most things while those in the lower class are not. Some of the questions that I would like to explore further from the chapter are; 1. Is it possible to bridge the wealth gap in society? 2. What would be required to bridge the gap? 3. What role would the government play towards having a society with no social classes?
