Chapter 14: Trouble Times
Why Many in the North Resist the Fugitive Slave Act
Many in the North resisted the Fugitive Slave Act because they considered the law as proof
of a "Slave Power" collusion and exclusive to slaveholders' inconsistent influence in US domestic
policy. Furthermore, Northern residents were against being forced to act as de facto slavecatchers1. In this case, the law discouraged people from assisting fugitive slaves and refusing to
contribute to return them. In this perspective, the law annoyed most northerners because it was
hypocritical, hence, allowing southerners to be favored by state policies and fail to comply with
federal laws regarding slavery. The Fugitive Slave Law was unpopular in many Northern states
since it required local and federal authorities to take fugitives from slavery and return them to their
owners.
How the "Bleeding Kansas" Changed the Face of Antislavery Advocacy
The "Bleeding Kansas" changed the face of Antislavery Advocacy by killing proslavery

The murder affected many radical abolitionists (for example, Brown) who realized that slavery
had to end by all possible means, such as open violence2. However, many pacifist counterparts,
like William Lloyd Garrison, were against the radical abolitionists' view of slave intervention3. In
this regard, radical abolitionists engaged in a war against free-state settlers.
