Description

1- Watch this video of several veterans reflecting on their experience of killing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSBFWhopvyk

Focus on one of the veterans. Has this person integrated their experience of killing into their sense of who they are? Do you see evidence of ongoing trauma resulting from their experience of killing?

(At least 150 words)

2- Watch this video of a Tucker Small wood's recollections of war and its aftermath. You may recognize him from his long acting career:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uz_Fxu1vA1Q

What symptoms of trauma can be discerned in Smallwood’s interview?

(At least 150 words)

3- Watch this video of a veteran’s description of their experience from enlistment to post-discharge:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tixOyiR8B-8

How does this Veteran’s experience illuminate how a soldier might commit atrocities against civilians? You may find it helpful to review the stages of violentization in Rhodes, Why They Kill, chaps. 10-11, and chap. 21).

(At least 150 words)

4- What advice would you give to political and military leaders generally about how to minimize the likelihood that the soldiers they lead will commit atrocities in war?

(At least 100 words)

5- In what ways does David seem to conform (or not conform) to the advice that Machiavelli gives to rulers? Consider David's career as described from 1 Samuel 16 to 1 Kings 2 in light of Machiavelli's The Prince (chaps. 14-19, on Blackboard). You can write this as a straightforward description/comparison, or if you prefer, take a more creative approach, such as writing it as a selection from David's memoirs (imagine he has a copy of The Prince) or Machiavelli's retelling/summary of David's career as an illustration of his points. (At least 400 words)

6- Consider the essay on David by McKenzie, then compose a short essay of your own about David focusing on the issue of his character. Do not retell the full story of his life, but offer a character sketch. Assume your audience knows the facts so that you can focus on interpretation. You might interpret David negatively, positively, or mixed. (At least 300 words)

7- Read up on the case of Edward (Eddie ) Gallagher, the Navy SEAL who was tried for war crimes then protected by President Trump. What similarities can you discover between Eddie Gallagher and the Vietnam veterans described in Why They Kill, chap 21? Does Gallagher seem to have undergone a process of violentization resulting in violent behavior outside the laws of war? Does political intervention to maintain Gallagher in the SEALS seem like a good idea (i.e., will it have a positive or negative impact on the SEALS)? Research him, his case, and the SEALS more generally as you think about wartime atrocities through the lens of violentization. You might start with

and https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/27/us/navy-seals-edward-gallagher-video.html

(at least 300 words)

8- Consider Eryl Davies essay ways of reading and thinking about "problematic texts" like Joshua. Which of the reading strategies that he describes appeals to you most and why? (At least 300 words)

9- Consider Niditch's description of various war ideologies operative in the Bible and the modern world and how any kind of media about war (news, movie, history book, monument, etc) may reflect one or more of these ideologies. For this journal entry, consider some war monument, its depiction of war, and how it fits (or not) with Niditch's ideologies. First, identify/describe what you have selected for consideration, then discuss how it represents war. Some potential media samples you might consider: (at least 300 words)

  • a war monument you have visited in the DC area. describe how it represents war in terms of Niditch's ideologies and wider observations about what the monument seems to communicate about wear in general of a particular war memorialized.
  • a biblical passage (Deuteronomy 20, Joshua 1–11 (or part of it), or another war story you know in the Bible). Describe how this text represents war.
  • a story from a newspaper, news broadcast, etc
  • a history book (or excerpt)
  • a Confederate monument caught up in current controversies (but only a specific monument)
  • a fictional story (novel, war movie)

10- War is an important subject, and serves as the topic of several songs. For example, Barry McGuire "Eve of Destruction" serves as an anti-war song in the Vietnam era, and provoked a music response by Sgt Barry Sadler, "Ballad of the Green Barets." Other good examples (also discoverable on YouTube) are Back Sabbath, "War Pigs" and Rise Against "Hero of War." Consider one of these songs or another war-related song and describe what it seeks to communicate about war. Does it fit into one of Niditch's ideologies? What aspects of war does it highlight? What effect might it have on hearers? (about 300 words)

11- Militaries around the world seek to encourage young people to enlist. Consider recruitment strategies from one or both of these perspectives. First, did the military try (or succeed) to recruit you? How? Second [alternative or in addition], look at one or more recruitment videos on YouTube of military recruitment videos. Analyze on such video or compare two diverse ads (provide links), potentially from different countries. Here are some sample links: (at least 300 words)

Question 1

The integration of the story of Lonnie presents a stance of the need to protect oneself
during the war. The character of the veteran gets exhibited in various ventures where they have
to kill to survive. Technically, the memories of killing do not reflect any ongoing severe trauma
in Lonnie. The character acts superbly fine and can be distinguished as fit to exist with the rest
of the population. Vietnam war was a scene with various gross incidents, and, surprisingly,
Lonnie exhibits a nature of stability. The killings do not affect him as he understands the
incidences of war must remain on the battlefield. There is no attribute of personal guilt in
killing while in combat, especially when the attack happens on the enemy. It is significant to
understand that people have to do what they have to do to survive while on the battlefield, and
this is the exact expression in the video (Cut, 2015).
Question 2
Smallwood goes through a series of trauma out of the experiences he had as a soldier
during the Vietnam war. Stances of troubled dreams and smelling the jungle are critical
symptoms of injury exposed in the interview. Technically, the pain of war can torture one and
feel like losing hope. Smallwood describes the experiences of being a soldier to be traumatic in
the field as it can distort your function. The wound that made him feel dead is an episode he
does not believe. An experience similar to what he had undergone in the war awakens the
scenes, and this causes traumatic moments. The scene at the park with the kids is a critical
example that triggers trauma and causes sobbing. Technically, a cycle of depression can cause

one to feel broken. Essential measures must be taken to ensure that soldiers and victims of war
emerge strong out of such occasions (HuffPost, 2019).
Question 3
When a soldier thinks of survival alone, they tend to be driven by emotions that cloud
their thinking. The political scene in Vietnam was gross, and it was clear that being in Vietnam
had no apparent purpose. Technically, such developments define the performances of
brutalization, defiance, Violence, and virulence. Misinformation in war contributes to the
considerable tension that can cause a significant need to commit atrocities. The attribute of
feeling abandoned can add to a soldier involving in crimes against the civilians. It is vital to
understand that soldiers go an extra mile and feel strained sometimes; at this point, the mind
only thinks of survival. Atrocities stem from the actions of soldiers seeing their counterparts
being brutalized and tortured. When an enemy terrorizes the soldier, and they fail to get support
from the civilians as well, they fail to comprehend this, and the pain of Violence contributes to
atrocities. Focusing on anger and fear of Vietnam citizens was a perpetual expression of
revenge for the dying counterpart soldiers (Hoffman, 2018).
Question 4
According to Jo & Simmons (2016), there are considerable measures to limit the soldiers
from committing atrocities in war. Political and military leaders must encourage the attribute of
taking responsibility for actions conducted by the soldiers. It includes performing trials for
eligibility of the soldiers before they get assigned duties. Political leaders must avoid the
inclination of speaking in inciting tones; the soldiers must remain apolitical to conduct their
roles effectively. Military leaders must develop strategies to punish those that commit atrocities

to help deter others from committing war crimes and other related vices (Jo & Simmons, 2016).
Through the provision of clear orders, military leaders ensure that the soldiers understand their
duties and only works within it.
Question 5
David’s career begun way back when he was young at the court of Saul. In comparison to
Machiavellian ways, David distinguishes as a smart ruler and a warri...
