When you give a gesture of a hug, smile, or a glancing nod you are ensuring that individual is acknowledged. The relationship built through social reinforcement helps in the long term, should conflict arise. It becomes easier to diffuse a situation when the people involved are hugged and smiled at, thus confirming those feelings are valid. A child who becomes defiant, with the cause unknown, it becomes easier to find a way in to communicate through social reinforcement.Positive Feedback can serve beneficial when working on a drawing, singing, read along, or parallel play time outdoors. When a child receives praise, they are more inclined to continue with the positive behavior, while receiving positive feedback. Should a child decide to interrupt a conversation, one must use calm and calculated words, while using positive feedback, to ensure they are being patient and waiting to speak. (Black, n.d) A child who interrupts a conversation with defiant behavior, must be ignored or acknowledged depending on the situation. Stern, straight and to the point, and one must never reward a child for being disrespectful. When they do behave through patience, than you reward, and continuously so.Intrinsic PunishmentsTime Out is one of the most referred to punishments used on children today. The process of time out is to remove the said child from the situation that a altercation or disruption that has occurred. The amount of time is based on their age, and a 7-year-old is for 7 min, a 4-year-old is for 4 min, and so on. A defiant child who is sent to time out takes the time to think about their actions, and after the time out the parent or teacher should explain what they can do to prevent it from happening again.Logical Consequences are used when the punishment fits the crime. Should a child decide track dirt in from outside, the punishment should be that the child vacuums up the mess they made. This type of punishment is a healthy way to teach children that their actions have consequences. A defiant child who tracks in dirt from outside may be reluctant at cleaning up their mess, but use a stern voice, and repeat with clear instructions to assist with the task at hand being completed.Parents Who Question Your MethodsShould the problem arise that a parent doesn’t appreciate the consequences you have given to the child in question you must plan a parent teacher conference, a email, or a reason as to why. Why this consequence in question isnt appropriate and open the floor to suggestions as to replacement consequences when their child misbehaves. If the punishment is not forth coming, per their parenting methods, what can I do as a teacher or instructor to rectify the situation.Extrinsic Reward for a 3-Year OldPer my experience the best method, extrinsic wise, is to incorporate a social reinforcer's among your routine, to build a strong bond. Happiness begets happiness, and the response is positive versus the latter, negative. 3-year-old's are still a open slate, and ready to learn what you teach them, and should you incorporate hugs, love, smiles, and nourishment that child will benefit long term in building confidence, appreciation, and thoughtfulness toward those who use positive reinforcer's.
