Definition Argument Essay Assignment Goal Write a 1,500-1,750-word essay using five to seven academic resources in which you argue that a contested “case” involving the sale, trade, or donation of human organs fits (or does not fit) within a given category. A case may include a specific news article, story, or incident illustrating a dilemma or controversy relating to the exchange of human organs. The case does not need to be a court case. Directions Follow these steps when composing your essay: 1. Start by selecting a controversial case found in the media involving the sale, trade, or donation of human organs. For example, an appropriate case might include a story in the news about an organ broker, and the term to define might be “criminal.” 2. Decide what category you think your case belongs in, with the understanding that others may disagree with you about the definition of your category, and/or whether your chosen case matches your category. 3. In the opening of your essay, introduce the case you will examine and pose your definition question. Do not simply summarize here. Instead, introduce the issue and offer context. 4. To support your argument, define the boundaries of your category (criteria) by using a commonly used definition or by developing your own extended definition. Defining your boundaries simply means naming the criteria by which you will discuss your chosen case involving the sale, trade, or donation of human organs. If you determine, for example, that an organ broker is a criminal, what criteria constitute this? A criminal may intentionally harm others, which could be one of your criteria. 5. In the second part of your argument (the match), show how your case meets (or does not meet) your definition criteria. Perhaps by comparing or sizing up your controversial case to other cases can help you to develop your argument. This essay is NOT simply a persuasive essay on the sale, trade, or donation of human organs. It is an argumentative essay where the writer explains what a term means and uses a specific case to explore the meaning of that term in depth. Human health is of utmost importance. Certain organs in the human body are of
significance that if they are damaged or removed, the victim might succumb due to the elimination
of particular functions in the body system. With the organs being that necessary in the body, it
comes at a significant cost to acquire one. There are thousands of people who require new organs
each year around the world. However, due to their rare availability, only a few are lucky to get
them. In most instances, the less fortunate in the society will be the donors. Some people have
admitted to offering their non-vital organs in exchange for cash to cope up with the high living
standards and the unpredictable economy. Because of this, there have come some people who
break deals between the donors and the recipients of the organs. These people are called the organ
brokers. There is a question of whether the organ brokers are criminals in the eyes of justice or not
since most donors report to having been duped into giving out their organs and getting little if not
nothing at all. Consequently, it is imperative that the activities of the organ brokers are put in their
legal category (Van Den Branden & Broeckaert, 2011).
In the business of organ donation and selling, it is evident that the trade takes place between
the rich and the poor in the society. The world is a funny place indeed. Whereas the poor cannot
afford to have new organs if theirs are damaged, it is rare for them to develop such complications.
The rich are however very gullible to such situations owing to their lifestyles and hence end up
seeking to obtain new organs. Since the gap between the rich and the poor does not allow for them
to have direct communications, the middlemen who are the organ brokers come in handy to link
the poor and the rich. The middlemen have for long benefited from such activities even though the
