Introduction
The Enlightenment era, also known as the Age of Reason, was a period in world history
between the 17th and 18th centuries, where people celebrated reason and revolutionized how
people looked at ideas concerning nature, humanity, and God. This led to revolutionary
developments in philosophy, politics, and art. Central to Enlightenment were ideas such as
human rights, individual freedom, and simple justice. Enlightenment was the basis of sciences
and mathematics and believed that humanity could be changed via rational change only by
questioning traditional authority. The major contributors of the enlightenment era were
influential persons such as Isaac Newton and John Locke. Benito Mussolini was Italy’s former
prime minister, and was described as a fascist dictator, and is known for supporting Adolf Hitler
during the Second World War (Hibbert et al.). His way of leadership went against the ideas of
Enlightenment since a lot of people suffered under his leadership. This research project seeks to
explore how the ideas of Enlightenment fared at the hands of Benito Mussolini.
