A patient came into the center where I provide counseling for mental health experts
asking for urgent help. She reported that she had anxiety and worried too much about bad things
happening. On this day she was skeptical about her chances of getting an airline job she had got
an interview for. Although she had the experience needed and the professional skills, she
reported having had nightmares about plan crashes. I inquired more about the causes of such bad
visions. She explained that she felt unworthy for the position and felt this way about all her
accomplishments since she was a young girl. I noticed that maybe the family issues were the
cause of the anxiety. Therefore I evoked her to hare her family history with me. She told me that
her biological father left when she was four years old. Her mother later remarried, but the
husband proved to be emotionally abusive. He did not compliment her and weighed down her
accomplishments at school. She felt very insecure because of this and developed very low selfesteem. Borrowing from my professional experience, I could tell that the patient's panic and
anxiety attacks stemmed from a negative perception induced by ridicule, bullying, and emotional
abuse from someone she looked up to as a father figure.
I advised her to form stronger relationships with other close people such as her brothers
and mothers and derive her sense of sled worth from them. Besides, I advised her to gauge such
situations objectively instead of merely believing what the other person projected to them. It is
common for people in bad emotional states to project their insecurities on others, especially
those who feel threatened. I would provide the same coping techniques and advice to new
patients because of the source of anxiety and panic stemmed from a difficult upbringing.
Individuals form their sense of self-worth at an early age, mostly because of the sentiments
communicated by their parents. Emotional abuse at an early age may evoke such negative
perceptions regardless of the accomplishments in school and the career. Later these perceptions
manifest in the form of anxiety and panic. Such patients should weigh situations objectively and
form their perceptions to overcome panic situations.
The experience provided valuable lessons on the effects of childhood upbringing on the
psychology of adults. I can relate this case to the case studies we learned in class, some of which
aimed to identify the root causes of mental illnesses. Having a one on one meeting with an actual
client with minor mental illness developed my internship plan since I was previously dealing
with paperwork and research. It was motivating to encounter an actual case study that gave me
professional confidence in my ability to engage and counsel clients. I feel more confident about
my counseling and diagnostic capabilities and plan to build on this experience by reading more
about anxiety attacks and the impact of emotional bullying on the psychological development of
a person.

One of my colleagues referred to me a patient with suspected schizophrenia. The basic
symptoms were that the patient interpreted things abnormally and experienced frequent
hallucinations. The patient was also very delusional and imagined things that would never
happen in real life. I started the diagnostic process by carrying out a physical examination. The
assessment helped me rule out other medical conditions that would cause similar symptoms and
determine whether the patient had any other related complications. I also asked for tests and
screening for alcohol and drugs. These included imaging results of the CT and MRI scans. I
checked the patients' mental status during the psychiatric evaluation, during which I observed the
patient's demeanor and appearance. I asked the patient to share his thoughts and observe his
mood and incidents of hallucinations and delusions. I found out the patient engaged in substance
abuse and occasionally suicidal. We also discussed the patients personal and family history. I
made the schizophrenic diagnosis based on the data provided by the American psychiatric
association.
After interviewing the patient and interpreting the test data, I found out that his illness
derived from psychosis. The psychosis caused reduced motor function that m...
