1. What kinds of intelligence can HUMINT provide that no other type of intelligence
can collect?
Human Intelligence of HUMINT is where information is collected through using trained
human intelligence collectors. They can accurately identify the elements, intention, strength,
personnel capabilities, foreign entities, and domestic terrorists. This information can be collected
either overtly or covertly depending on the collection instruments and the specified requirements
for that collection (Johnson, 2010, p. 267). HUMINT’s best uses are in the collection of
information that utilizes activities such as tactical questioning, interrogation, liaison, human
source contact operations, and the capturing of adversarial equipment. What makes HUMINT
unique is the dichotomy between clandestine and covert operations where secrecy is critical. In
this, the collection that HUMINT excels at occurs in providing actionable intelligence that
answers the five W’s (Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How). This is the only intelligence
discipline that can conduct clandestine operations and serves as one of the oldest forms of
intelligence gathering in the entirety of the intelligence apparatus. Furthermore, NCS officers
must incorporate the complex aspects of handling assets, that of human nature. All of the
emotions, intentions, and motivations that occur in people are different. It is the role of an NCS
officer to ensure that the asset is stable and maintained to ensure that this individual continues to
collect valuable and actionable HUMINT (CIA, 2010). It is arguably the “human touch” that
derives HUMINT’s unique nature and intelligence gathering capabilities.
