Description

student 1:After nearly five months in quarantine, my daily communicative routine is practically the same. Some main things I do that take up most of my time include: watching TV shows, gaming, studying, browsing web pages and social medias, talking with people face-to-face, and texting. In comparison, my boyfriend's communicative day is surprisingly simple. He plays games with his friends, watch gaming videos, and talks to me. That's it. When I talked to him about it, he said that he enjoys what he does everyday and that is enough. To be honest, I agree with him. What people do are different, but the difference is simply because each one of us is different. (personality, interests, culture, age......) I'm a social person, and that is why I would update my social media page once in a while and consistently texting my friends. In contrast, he is not a social person. He mainly gains energy from focusing on one thing (gaming in this case).

Another point I want to make here is that we cannot draw implications of communicative platforms/methods from what a person does; We can only comment on their preferences, which is like a needle in the sea of the world of communication. After all, communication itself is subjective (and there are so many variables surrounding it) and it is very hard to find the the most efficient and effective way of doing so.

I want to end this post by expressing my admiration to all those communication specialists out there who helped us to understand more about communication as a whole by conducting countless amount of surveys, observational researches, experiments and much more. For me, this particular exercise is not about the exercise itself, but more about understanding the difficulty and beauty behind it!! ;)

student 2: For this activity I observed my mom, as she has been working at home during the pandemic.  Today was a bit different from other days, as we both went to get tested for COVID as a precautionary measure before visiting my grandmother.  While we were waiting in line to be tested, our methods of communication and communicative activities contrasted over the 4 hours.  As she was the driver, she had to stay awake in case the line moved.  Therefore, she kept herself occupied by checking and sending work emails, looking at Facebook, and communicating with friends and co-workers over the phone.  She felt that she was less distracted as she did not have the distractions present at home.  I did not have to be as vigilant, so I mainly occupied my time with listening to music and napping.  While I was awake, I checked social media, listened to Spotify, and messaged my friends on Snapchat/I message.  I usually do not listen to Spotify while I nap, but since we were stuck in line I used music to both occupy my time and allow me to sleep while my mom had work calls.  In that four hour span, our generational differences in communication was evident.  She tended to use social media that is predominated by older users like Facebook, whereas I used social media that is mainly used by younger people like Snapchat, Tiktok, and Instagram.  In addition, she was more likely to reach out to friends through phone calls and I was more likely to message friends through text or Snapchat.  While our channels of communication were different, our actions of virtually reaching out to friends and family reflect our desire to stay connected during the pandemic.  The rest of the day my mom continued her prior methods of communication with the addition of conference calls and zoom meetings.  My methods of communication stayed constant, except for participating in this week’s section over zoom.
