Sexual assault refers to any form of coerced or forced sexual contact that occurs without the
consent of the other party. It entails sexual behaviors such as, attempted rape or rape, drug
facilitated sexual assault, forced kissing, child molestation, sexual threats and harassment. Sexual
assault and harassment is a statutory offense in several jurisdictions, like the United States,
Scotland, England and Wales, Canada and Ireland. Sexual harassment is often witnessed in the
work place context, whereby one party or gender coerces another party in a sexual nature. Sexual
contact is supposed to be performed by two or more consenting party who are of legal age.
However, in an event where one party bullies or coerces another party in a asexual manner, then
the behavior is referred to as sexual assault and harassment. According to the US Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), it is illegal to harass an individual (either an
employee or a job candidate) because of his/her sex. In the US employment context, the harasser
can be a supervisor, a colleague or a client, and the harasser and/or victim can be of any gender
or sex (Marshall, Laws, Barbaree, 2013).
Sexual harassment and assault is witnessed and reported by individuals from different
professions. Just like in any other profession, sexual assault is witnessed and reported by
individuals in the military. Sexual assault in the US military is an ongoing problem and has
received a lot of media coverage in the recent past. According to a research survey conducted by
Pentagon in 2012, an estimated of 26,000 women and men serving in the US military have been
sexually assaulted. Of the 26,000, only 3,374 assault incidences were reported. Similarly in
2013, the Pentagon survey reported that approximately 5,060 men and women reported assault
cases (Mengeling, Booth, Torner, Sadler, 2014). This is a 50% increase in reported cases as
