Description
The paper is to be approximately six pages in length (about 1500 words) excluding the title page and the references page. The chosen issue is to be compared to a similar issue in the United States. Use the following questions to focus the paper
1. Discuss the health issue in the chosen country/community. (Health issues in Kenya, diarrheal disease, malnutrition, contamination- is what my previous papers have been about)
- What is it?
• Who is impacted?
• Why is the health issue important?
• What are the consequences of not addressing the health issue?
• Identify the two or three social determinants of health that have the most impact on the chosen health issue. Explain the influence. ( I'll attach links that talk about social determinants of health)
2. Is the same health issue present in the United States?
- Who does the health issue impact in the U.S.?
• Is it as big of a problem in the U.S.?
• What is similar, and what is different about the health issue in the two countries?
• Identify the two or three social determinants of health that have an impact on the chosen health issue in the U.S. Explain the influence.
• If the health issue does not exist in the U.S., explain the reasons for this being so.
3. Identify an intervention (or interventions) that would address the identified health issue. There is no specified number of interventions required, but if education is chosen as an intervention it cannot be the only intervention. Would the proposed interventions differ between the chosen country and the U.S.?
- Identify the connection between the social determinants of health, the health issue, and the interventions.
- Persuade the audience that the identified intervention(s) would be useful in addressing the chosen health issue.
- Again, education CANNOT be the only intervention but can be used in combination with another intervention.
Technical Aspects of the Paper
1. No need to include an abstract.
2. Include a minimum of five (5) references. References must be no older than five years (unless making a specific point using a seminal or classical piece of literature). Acceptable references include peer-reviewed databases, textbook material, and any sources that has been peer reviewed. References that are NOT acceptable include (not an inclusive list): UpToDate, Epocrates, Medscape, WebMD, hospital organizations, insurance recommendations, and secondary databases. There is no need to include the annotated bibliography.
3. Use Times New Roman or Arial font, size 12 font; 1-inch margins; double spaced
4. Include an appropriately formatted APA 7th edition student title page. There is no Running head in student papers for the 7th edition.
5. Use APA 7th edition format throughout the paper.
6. Review the MUGS document and use the information where appropriate.
7. The paper must include:
- An introduction that includes a thesis statement
- Body of the paper that supports the thesis, organizes and fleshes out the main ideas, and topics are sequenced so that the flow makes sense.
- Conclusion
8. Refer to the Rubric for how the paper will be evaluated ( I'll attach the rubric and a detailed instructions for the paper)

HEALTH ISSUES IN KENYA
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has highlighted the current health
issues in Kenya. Kenya is a developing country with a challenging health care system.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, many Kenyans suffer from
diarrhea due to malnutrition and contamination. World Health Organization focuses on
helping the country to eliminate these health issues because they are of public health
concern (World Health Organization 2019).
Diarrhea is a condition in which an individual produces watery bowel movement.
Passing loose stools three or more times a day is referred to as diarrhea. Diarrhea
occurs due to the consumption of contaminated food and malnutrition. World Health
Organization's statistics on diarrhea had reached 14.5% deaths in 2018. Malnourished
citizens develop infectious diseases. Malnutrition refers to lack of enough food,
improper nutrition, and not having a balanced diet. Malnutrition can lead to diarrhea
when not controlled. World Health Organization reports have confirmed that 73000
people in Kenya are malnourished.
Kenya experienced both food and water
contamination. The contamination of water has been a result of industrial activities.
There are no enough food storage systems; hence foods get contaminated.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that there are three forms
of diarrhea. There is acute watery diarrhea that can last for hours or days. Cholera has
been identified as acute watery diarrhea because it lasts for hours to days and can be
fatal. Acute bloody diarrhea, dysentery, is also very fatal. Dysentery is a fatal disease
with a high morbidity rate. Another type of diarrhea is persistent diarrhea and can last
3
for 14 days or longer. The body becomes dehydrated due to loss of water and salts
leading to the weakening of the immune system.
A population-based surveillance study in Kenya reported that children and adults
are majorly infected. Many children in South Turkana suffer from malnutrition. On the
other hand, people living in slums such as Kibera suffer from diarrhea due to pollution
and contamination in the slums. The vulnerable populations are majorly impacted by
diarrhea, malnutrition and contamination. Children and the elderly suffer from
malnutrition since they cannot fend for themselves (Iijima, Y. et al. 2016). That means
they have to consume anything they find; thus, they suffer from diarrhea and
contamination. Viral infections primarily cause diarrhea in children; hence require
immediate medical attention.
Diarrhea is important because it raises public health concerns. Diarrhea has led
to deaths; hence considered important. Diarrhea has been identified as the primary
cause of death in children, thus is of public health significance. Diarrhea increases the
morbidity rate being that it spreads from one person to the other. The morbidity is higher
in under-five children due to their weak immune system. Many children can be affected
in any case they consume contaminated food or drink contaminated water. Diarrhea is
also significant because it can impact the whole community. When an outbreak occurs,
many people in the community would be affected; therefore, becoming very difficult to
control. There are simple lifestyles that increase the risks of diarrhea; those who do not
sanitize have increased risks of infection (HealthyPeople.gov 2020). According to the
World Health Organization, diarrhea has been identified as the second leading cause of
death among the under-five years old children; therefore, it has become a public health
4
problem and must be addressed. The organization also reports that diarrhea kills almost
52000 children every year.
Diarrhea is a condition that can last for several days. During this time, the body
becomes dehydrated, leading to death. Malnutrition has been a primary factor in the
cause of diarrhea. Children who are malnourished are severely infected with the
condition. Diarrhea is an important health issue because it can spread from one person
to another due to improper hygiene. Improper hygiene is a cause of diarrhea episode.
There are consequences of not addressing diarrhea condition. A...
