Introduction: The Relationship Between Communication Skills and Emotional Intelligence
(EI)
There are a lot of benefits to appropriately measure and manage one’s emotions, the
emotions of others in both individual and group situations. In general, people with higher EI are
in a better position to form and maintain interpersonal relationships. They are also better placed
to ‘fit in’ to team or group situations. From a psychological perspective, people with higher EI
better understand their psychological state, which is advantageous in managing stress, decreasing
the likelihood of suffering from depression. Researchers in psychology often divide EI into two
main fronts- personal and social competencies. Personal EI skills help us manage ourselves and
our emotional states, while social EI skills help us manage our relationships with others. Social
EI skills include aspects such as empathy, leadership & influence, all of which are almost
entirely dependent on an individual’s communication skills. Communication, as a skill, is an
important aspect of EI because it is the primary way in which individuals impact empathy,
negotiate the needs of others with one’s own, finding common ground, persuading others as well
as expressing opinions (Cherry et al., 2013). Communication is the primary form of emotional
and psychological contact between individuals. As such, developing ones, EI requires developing
one’s communication skills, the major precursor for social EI skills. This individual development
plan is a subtle attempt at developing steps and resources needed to maximize and improve all
aspects of interpersonal communication in a manner that enhances an individual’s EI (Cherry et
al., 2013).
Goal Description
The primary objective of this individual development plan is to create a rationale for
assessing one’s communication skills (strengths and weaknesses), which would help in
