Question description

Maximizing Community Involvement

In reviewing “Community Involvement: The Ultimate Force Multiplier,” thoroughly discuss and explain three areas where community involvement has been identified as the key to the success of the department or agency. In your opinion, what is the key component in securing the desired level of commitment from the community? Why?

Community policing refers  to a system that allows law enforcement agencies  to interact with the communuties that they serve in  different ways. This system enhances cooperation among the police department and the individual citizens or community at large to identify and resolve  issues which potentially affect the safety of specific areas. This relationship has increasingly recognised the importance of  the police and the residents working together as partners. This in turn enables the department to develop knowledge of the community and also provides vital intelligence relating to potential crime.

Community engagement has been identified in the United States especially, as a key tool in fighting terrorism and crime. A good example is in San Diego where the department readily assimilated this technique into their agency as it has proven to be a cornerstone in its investigative and preventative counterterrorosm efforts. The agency in San Diego even developed a training program for its citizens to empower them in their efforts to prevent crime or social disorders that lead to crime. Commmunity engagement has succeeded in making communities across the U.S safer and may as well constitute the ultimate force multiplier.

Community involvement is also closely associated with administrative decentralization. Commumity policing emphasises on the need for individuality of police officers. It requires the adoption of a new flexible way of policing management. This approach has seen the shift of responsibility, decision making and liability down through the department to the patrol officer.

Community involvement is also linked to developing a sense of trust  between the public and the agency. This mutual trust is pivotal to the success of this approach of community policing. The public is able to recognise the value of police activities which are meant to improve the quality of life among them. The police also are able to access vital information from the citizens which is important in crime prevention and crime control. (Miller, Hess,  and  Orthmann, 2011).

However, building trust and mobilizind residents is never easy in many cases. In order to develop this trust for an effective and lasting relationship, the police must find it upon themselves to display dignity and respect when dealing with public. Also the agency can motivate the community by offering training programs and educating them on how to recognise suspicious activities. This enables the public to know what to be on the lookout for. Helping the public feel comfortable working together with the police is therefore vital  in securing the desired  level of commitment from the community.
