1. What is the central message of this film?
The central message of the film titled “Taxi Driver “by Martin Scorsese is that loneliness
is a primary fact that is part of human existence, and people cannot escape from it. Scorsese uses
characters like Travis Bickle to portray loneliness that every person experiences at some point in
life. Loneliness is a state in which people deliberately seclude themselves from other people
hence drawing a clear line between themselves and other people in the community. Paul
Schrader, the writer of the play, perceives loneliness as a mechanism of not being able to get
what you want and not desiring what you already have besides it beings a state of mind. For
example, Travis is the reason behind his loneliness since every step hand decision he decides to
make ends up drawing people away from him. Travis notices and is interested in a lady named
Betsy. When he gets the opportunity to take her out, he takes her to a pornography movie seen in
the 11min 50 sec of the movie an act that Betsy deemed unpleasant and disrespectful (Scorsese,
1976). This act portrays his social ignorance as well as his hopeless doomed condition. He
intentionally ruins his date with a woman he desires to be alone, which shows his efforts to
disconnect with people and the environment surrounding him.
2. Do the scenes go together; do they add up to something; is there a rhythm
established so that there is form, shape, climax, building up of tension? Give
