MAJOR CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF STRESS ON COLLEGE STUDENTS

2

Introduction
Stress is said to be a necessity in the lives of human beings. This is because it
helps add opportunities and challenges to the world around them. Stress is also part of
the daily experiences of college students. Stress can be healthy when given at the right
dose. However, it can also be quite damaging for students when it becomes excessive
(Humphrey, 2003). In order to avoid the undesired effects of stress, students should
look into the causes of stress to help them make plans in dealing with it.
Major causes of stress
The five major causes of stress among college students include the following;
new environment, new relationships, competitive nature of exams and circumstances,
lack of proper time management as well as the pressure and expectations from parents
(Koslowsky, 2013).
To begin with, human behaviors and emotions are influenced by their
surroundings. Therefore, when students go from high school to university straight away,
they face the challenge of leaving their homes and separating themselves from their
families (McNeil, 2011). They are hence forced find a new identity as adults and their
place in the new environment. In this new environment, they have to manage their
budget, practice housekeeping and find their way in the strange environment. This can
be over whelming for many students and so these factors can cause them great
sadness and tension especially the international students or those from other states.

Aside from that, establishing new relationship can be a cause of stress among
the college students too. This is because, they have an intense need to fit in with the
mainstream activities and groups and be accepted any certain people whom they want
to be friends with. They also fear being ridiculed and rejected by these new friends. This
situation gets worse when the student has an accent or is from a different religion or
race from that of most students in the school. When students go to college they leave
behind their childhood friends and other friends whom they made in elementary and
high school (Landow, 2006).
It gets worse when the people they know are sent to different schools from them.
These students hence find it hard to even form relationships because of the fear of the
unknown (Humphrey, 2003). Ever the former high school bullies can get stressed over
this issue because in college, things are different from high school and those people
who used to be in their circle are no longer with them. Some might even seclude
themselves and add to their stress levels as they have no one to share these problems
with.
In addition to that, the high competitive environment and exams in college can
lead to stress among these students. Besides that, the circumstances in high school are
far apart from those in high school. The workload for instance in college including
quizzes, assignments, projects and presentations is quite high compared to that in high
school. In addition to that, the lecturers in college require more information and
knowledge from students for them to get more points. The subjects are also vast and
new to students and they are also not sure whether they majored in the correct path so

most of them get caught up by the pressure and anxiety of adjusting to the subject
changes and as a result get stressed (Koslowsky, 2013).
The high expectation and pressure from parents can also be a source of stress.
These days, a lot of middle class families have higher education and so, they expect
their children to have a far better education and the ability compared to them (McNeil,
2011). In addition to that, they also want their children to exceed their expectations and
so this gives the students a lot of pressure. On one hand, the student does not wish to
fail their parents while on the other it is significantly hard to adjust to the changes and so
they develop stress as a result.
Lack of proper time management can also yield to stress given the freedom and
flexibility in college environments. Having left the rigidly structured schedules in high
school behind, student often find themselves struggling to balance academic, personal
and work commitments in college. Many students hence end up giving up when faced
with such competing demands on their time and letting the situation take its own course.
Therefore, those students who cannot be in a position to manage their time
appropriately end up being on the receiving end of stress. With time their academic
performances start taking a downward trend and if nothing is done they can face a lot of
negative consequences (Landow, 2006).
