Description

Step 1: Respond to the following:

Suppose one of your friends is struggling with the process used to factor a trinomial. You show your friend this formula for a trinomial: ax2 + bc + c   where  LaTeX: a\ne0a ? 0  and LaTeX: a\ne1a ? 1

Next, you give your friend this equation as an example:

2x2 + 11x + 12.

Imagine that you go on to instruct your friend on factoring trinomials using this example.

  • What do you think is a common mistake that your friend might make when factoring this type of trinomial?
  • What advice would you give your friend for avoiding this mistake?
  • What would you tell your friend to do in order to check his work after he factored the trinomial?

Rubric:

  • -Posts well developed answers that fully addresses and develops all aspects of the concept
  • -Posts factually correct, reflective and substantive contribution; advances discussion.

When it comes to factoring a trinomial, there are a couple of ways that one could go
about doing it. However, not everyone is knowledgeable about how to use these methods to
solve a problem of this sort. Because of this shortcoming, there are some mistakes that come
with attempting to solve this kind of problem.
One of the mistakes that can occur when trying to solve this problem has to do with the
coefficient in the first term, or the a in ax2 + bx + c. Not many people understand how to deal
with the coefficient, so they may find themselves trying to factor the trinomial in a normal
manner. In this case, finding the factors of the number and simply putting them into pairs of
parentheses does not yield the correct answer. Once this point has been reached, most people
do not go back and try to correct the issues with the solving process, and they can find
themselves giving up on making an effort to get the correct answer. Another common mistake
that is made with factoring trinomials is made when it comes to the signs that are used in the
problem. The signs that are attached to certain numerals can cause a mass of confusion when
trying to factor the trinomials. Even if individuals know what method to use when factoring the
trinomial, paying attention to what signs would b...
