Cases | J.J is a nurse practitioner who works in a primary care facility. He believes that one of the most important aspects of his work is to foster a therapeutic relationship with his clients. He is using effective communication techniques. Many of his clients have altered sensory perception such as blindness and deafness. Because of these conditions, He has to be extremely patient with his clients. A personal experience where you have faced Moral distress in your practice
Moral distress is defined as an emotional condition that emerges from a situation when a
medical practitioner feels that the duties they are tasked to do are different from what is regarded
to as ethically correct (Rennó et al. 2018). When policies and procedures hinder a medical
practitioner from what they think is ethical, they are presented with a moral dilemma. Nurses
usually experience moral distress in many situations; however, those who perform their duties in
operating and emergency rooms experience it the most.
My own experience of moral distress happened when I freshly graduated from nursing
school. I was working in the pediatric ICU since I was a newly graduated nurse. My patient was
a three-month-old boy who was comatose and needed mechanical ventilation. His head's CT
tests demonstrated massive bilateral subdural hemorrhages. The boy's mother was suspected of
child abuse behaviors, which had earlier been reported to the police. Although the issue was
reported, no charges were filed...
