Yesterday, you received an e-mail from one of your subordinates that was also sent out to everyone in the department. The e-mail hinted that people from a certain geographic region were not as smart as those from other regions. Today, you receive the following e-mail from Walter:

Subject: Was I Wrong?

I am receiving many e-mails from our colleagues stating how they are offended by the e-mail I sent out yesterday. I thought it was funny, and evidently, others just can’t take a joke. So far, I have refused to respond to any of their e-mails, hoping that by ignoring them, they would let it go. But now, I am wondering if I should apologize. What do you think?

You were just hired to work on training manuals for a multimillion-dollar retail company that produces ski equipment and accessories designed specifically for women. Instead of selling products through the Internet like their competitors, this organization sends their customers to the nearest retail store so they can actually try out the products.

You have prepared a new training manual that explains how to sell and market toward the intended female consumer that needs to be sent to all the retail stores. You need to write a letter to accompany the training manual to encourage each of the managers and store owners to use the materials to train their salespeople. You are concerned about using language that could sound sexist; therefore, you want to try to stay away from using her and she in your letter. The products are designed for women, but that does not exclude men from being customers.

With this issue in mind, write a letter explaining the importance of the training materials, what they are, and how they should be used. Be sure to describe the types of customers who would be looking for this type of equipment.
