These six issues are:

  1. Ownership of Mass Media Businesses
  2. Sports
  3. Fake News
  4. Advertising
  5. Media Violence
  6. Privacy

Part 1: Introduction

Write an essay in APA style that analyzes and further develops your topic based on a major headline/news event from one of the six themes: Ownership of Mass Media Businesses, Sports, Fake News, Advertising, Media Violence, or Privacy. You will need to do research outside of your textbook across various information systems.

Your essay will have 800 words and identify the key ideas of the event.

  • How did the media shape the event/story?
  • How did others react to the way it was portrayed in the media?
  • Did others create movements based on the way the media portrayed the event?
  • Did people react differently in other parts of the world?
  • How was the event shaped by various information systems?

Part 2: Case Study

For this part of the project, you’re going to continue using the same topic/event that was used in Capstone Part #1 and do a compare-and-contrast case study. It will require you to view your topic from three different angles: locally, nationally, and globally. Your case study should be written in APA style, have 800 words, and compare and contrast your topic with how it was portrayed from a local, national, and global standpoint.

  • Was there a difference with media coverage about your topic in other parts of the world?
  • Were the reactions from consumers varied in other parts of the world?
  • Did different movements happen in other parts of the world based on the topic/event?
  • What were the similarities?
  • What were the differences?

Part 3: Final Paper

This part of the Capstone Project will require you to reflect on your capstone project case and what you learned so far about media literacy. Your final paper should be in APA style, will have 800 words and answer the following:

  • How did the process of researching influence your understanding as it relates to media literacy?
  • Explain how you became more media literate after researching your topic.
  • Expound on how your view shifted as it relates to media literacy after completing this project.
  • Describe how the project changed your perspective on how media outlets persuade you in viewing and reacting to their content.
  • What local and international organizations work on the issue of media literacy? Which of those work on themes related to your capstone project case? How can people get involved with them? Provide contact information and relevant projects or initiatives. Propose an idea for a specific initiative that would increase media literacy among a specific audience around the case you analyzed for your capstone project. (This section of your final paper will be used to assess the Global Engagement Outcome for Global Learning)

Part 1: Event

Reading through a DW report on 11th November 2018, it is saddening a social media
platform as prominent as Facebook can be a source of violence due to the users' fake news.
Facebook is a platform that offers a wide range of networking across the world without any form
of restrictions. Therefore, it is possible to watch videos and view photos uploaded, and these
media are usually highly shared by the users. Spreading news through Facebook is very
convenient and this news can have a lasting effect on the use. The story in question is about a
Buddhist woman who reported to a police station that a Muslim man had allegedly raped her.
Unknown people recorded the incident and shared it on Facebook (Meaker, 2018). Two days
later there was a crush between Muslims and Buddhists in the city of Mandalay. The reported
rape case was later emerged to be a lie, and the woman confessed that she was paid by an
unknown person to lie.
DW, as a German media giant is concerned of the safety of Facebook since it is was not
the first incident of spreading fake news that caused violence. In 2014, 700,00 Muslims fled
Rohingya due to the spread of fake news. DW perceives Facebook as a platform that provides a
backdrop for ethical violence. Facebook has become an unstoppable platform that communicates
violence, and the main concern is that it is uncensored, and anybody can watch the content at any
moment. DW airs their view suggesting that social media owners should control their platform
and at least have an age limit for the users.
People interviewed by DW about social media being a platform that people with evil
motives use to spread violence showed their concern over the increasing rise of incidents caused

by social media. Some suggested that users' information shared with the public through social
media platforms should be filtered and controlled. The authorities should take action to lower the
number of people falling social media victims. One person expressed the concern of terrorists
using the platforms to radicalize people with the same ideologies.
The Buddhist woman's claims led to violence outbreak between Muslims and the
Buddhists due to her false allegations. If the people who recorded the video had not broadcast it
on the social, the two groups would not have fought each other, injuring 19 people. Also,
radicalization of false information made 700,000muslims flee from Myanmar for no apparent
reason (Meaker, 2018). This unprecedented move cause unsuitability both in the country and in
the individual people who fled. With these kinds of violent acts, the media should learn to
control their content to avoid fighting and instabilities in our society. There should be regulations
to prevent the same.
The two incidents that affected both countries were because of the videos uploaded on
social media and viewed worldwide. The two religious groups would not have fought if the user
did not upload the videos on social media. Many people are against ethics fights wishing that the
world would become one big global village. Therefore, what affect...
