Technology advancement has been one of the most recognized trends influencing
distance education. Infrastructures have continued to advance as computer costs decrease,
processor speeds have doubled and expansion of high speed network connections. Information
technology capabilities that did not exist years ago are being gained and what’s coming in the
future is better yet unimaginable. Translating this to higher education, learning is transforming at
very high rates. Distance education continues to improve through the introduction of video
conferencing among other technologies that are gradually replacing the face-to-face instruction.
Distance education existed before the internet became a hit. It mainly constituted audio,
correspondence, and audio visual which developed from specific technologies, but faced
limitations of such media. The arrival of the World Wide Web did a great deal of bridging these
gaps which, restructured distance education into two categories namely: asynchronous education
and synchronous education. These two distinct overtures are meant for specific educational aims
and they share mutual objectives (Heller, Oros, and Durney-Crowley, 2000).
