The word environment may be generally described as one’s surroundings. Specifically, it can be
said that environment is the biological and physical habitat surrounding us that may be felt by
ones physical faculties that is touched, seen, tasted, heard and smelled. There are two main
categories of environment which are: 1. Physical environment-the external physical factors such
as land, Air and Water etc. The physical environment is also known as the abiotic environment.
2. Living environment-this involves each and every living organism that surround us. Things like
plants, microorganisms and animals. This category is also known as the biotic environment.
Further, the environment of the earth can be subdivided into four segments as follows:

1. Atmosphere:
This refers to the air surrounding the earth and consist gases such as Oxygen and carbon
dioxide. it consists of air extending up to 500km above the surface of the earth Atmosphere
consist of four major regions, namely, troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere and
thermosphere.Troposhere is the nearest to the earth’s surface extending up to about 11km and
accounts for about 70% of the atmospheric mass.The temperature in this region decreases with
