Data Collection Tools Part 1
In my case, I will focus on improvement patient safety in healthcare excellent towards
improving patient care. Patient safety is designed to improve overall patient safety and security.
Firstly, patient safety entails correct identification of patients regarding naming, date, and the
right identification. Secondly, we have improved staff communication for better understanding
between the patient and the medical practitioner offering the assistance. Thirdly, patient safety
aims at improving the correct use of medicine regarding labeling, procedure, and recording.
Fourthly, proper use of alarms and making sure that signals are heard and responded to
immediately. Lastly, patient safety requires that patients’ risks like suicide be identified, and
mistakes in surgery prevented. Having looked at what patient safety entails I will divide research
into two parts namely; Data Collection Tools and Data Display, Measurement and Reporting.
Data collection tools monitor improvements.
Information is very crucial to be collected to monitor the improvements needed in the
organization. Some of the information includes; looking at whether the patients are identified
correctly, whether they are received and communicated to in the right way, correct labeling of
medicine and prescription and the kind or care given to patients regarding monitoring. Once this
data is collected correctly, it can be closely monitored for further improvements hence improving
the image of Davis Health Care, which is dedicated to providing an excellent patient care
experience. It is this data, which can improve the patient safety.
Data collection tools
Using questionnaires with closed and open-end questions provides different types of data
that narrow in on specific subjects. This involves use general topics but sensitive in a way to
identify some of the main challenges a given organization is facing. Like in our case, Davis

healthcare can conduct a questionnaires research on what is happening in the organization to
come up with the right information needed in coming up with comprehensive data for the better
company. The other tool that can be used is observation. Observation is a technique that involves
systematically selecting, watching and recording behaviors and characteristics of a given
phenomenon. In this case, one can use observation to look at how the patients communicate with
the medics in the hospital, look at how the hospital keeps the records of the patients and look at
the general care given to patients. This information is very necessary for coming up with
generalizations o what is happening in the organization. Therefore, Davis Health Care should
hire professionals to make these important observations on what is going on in the organization.
From there the necessary amendments can be done to come up with better data, which is reliable
in transforming the image of the organization, in this case, Davis Health Care. The third method
that can be used is an interview. Interviews in quantitative research comprise of closed-end
structured questions, which are asked by the interviewer to the interviewee. These interviews can
be face-to-face, telephonic or computer-assisted personal interviews. Interviews can be fully
structured, semi-structured or unstructured. Structured interview tends to have some sense of
formality with a clear set guideline, which is followed. Semi-structured tends to have some sense
of formality but not that fixed like the case of a structured interview. Lastly, the unstructured
interview does not have any regulation guiding on how it is conducted to come up with data.
Here the interviewer has the choice to ask whatever questions he or she may have.
Types of information each tool collects
Questionnaires can be used to evaluate the level of health care access to determine to
what level are the medics reachable by their clients regarding communication. Surveys can also
provide the necessary information needed to improve the operations in the hospital. Especially in

looking at the roles of each team player plays towards the achievement of the companies a goal.
Questionnaires can also help in offering feedback from the on the care given by physicians and
nurses towards appointment and time and the extent to which the patient feels satisfied.
However, for the surveys to be effective, they must have sufficient questions needed in
conducting the research. Again, it must be short and entertaining in a way.
Observation as a tool of data collection can be used to look at the extent to which the
patients are satisfied regarding the service given. Observation can help in collecting data on the
time taken to serve a client as well as the waiting period (Silverman, 2016). The view can be
used to evaluate the cost, freeness of the patient the doctor. Observation can help in looking at
the after services given by the hospital to the patient. Again, one can look at the counseling
services given by the hospital to its patients.
Lastly, interviews can be carried on the patients to question them on their level of
satisfaction regarding the service offered you. Through the interview, one can interrogate the
patients on how they feel towards the hospital. This will can be done through asking short
structured questions like asking them how the medical personnel communicate to them? Ask
them whether they feel the contact time is sufficient? Ask about the medicine given? Ask on post
medical assistance for example counseling. This information is very helpful and can be relied
upon in improving the image of the hospital to better levels.
Strengths and Weaknesses of each data collection tool
Questionnaires have the advantage of asking questions, which can be very effective in
research especially if using closed-ended questions (Taylor, Bogdan & DeVault, 2015). This
because they generate efficient data reliable in depicting the real image of what is happening in

the organization. On the other side, they have the disadvantage of limiting the level of response
by the person being questioned again they still require the budget to conduct them.
Observations have the advantage of seeing the exact happenings hence generating the
right information useful in improving the hospital facility. It is also a cheap method of data
collection since it does not require many materials to conduct. However, it has the disadvantage
of being biased by the person conducting the research. Therefore, the observer may give
unreliable information.
Lastly, interviews have the advantage of asking to follow up questions for better
understanding of the respondents’ answers hence providing better information unlike
questionnaires, which tend to be fixed. On the contrary, interviews tend to have the disadvantage
of being time-consuming and at times one may not reach the desired target population.
Explain how the data collection tools are similar and different.
They are all similar in the sense that they all target collecting information. Like in this
case, the target information is looking at how to improve patient safety at Davis Health Care. On
the difference, they all use different means to collect information and the results before
constructing a report tend to be different due to the disadvantages discussed above.

Tool measures, Displays, and Reports
Tables can be used to measure the extent to which a phenomenon has occurred. Like in
the case of a hospital, we can create a table showing how patients have been attended. Tables
carry information on the expected information. In most cases, the information tends to be very
specific like for instance a focus on the number of patients. Table displays and reports
information in a simple manner easy to understand. However, it does not give predictions.
Charts on the other hand measures information regarding the extent to which it has occurred.
Charts include pie charts among others. They tend to have some statistical data of what is
happening in an organization. Displays information in simplified manner and reports information
more statically to predict what is going on and what is likely to happen (Garner & Scott, 2013).
Measurement, display, and reporting tool's strengths and weaknesses
Tables are cheap to construct and understand hence reach out many people as possible.
However, they have the disadvantage of being brief and carry limited information, and if detailed
they tend to be too lengthy. Charts, on the other hand, have the advantage of being detailed in a
way and incorporating much information. Again, they are very brief and easy to understand for
those who get the meaning. However, they have the disadvantage of needing some knowledge to
construct and come times need some calculations.
How the measurement, display, and reporting tools are similar and different from
each other
They all related in that they both help in summarizing information to be in a brief and
easy to understand way. The only difference they have is the type of information they carry and
how they are constructed. Tables are cheap to construct and understand hence reach out many
people as possible. However, they have the disadvantage of being brief and carry limited

information, and if detailed they tend to be too lengthy. Charts, on the other hand, have the
advantage of being described in a way and incorporating much information.
Useful measurement, display, and reporting tools are for health care organizations
They are helpful in the sense that they help health care organizations to get in touch with
the reality and understand what is going on in the organization. Again, they can be relied upon to
improve in what is happening in a given organization. Again, these tools can show information
like how patients visit the facility. Look at the level of satisfaction and much more.
