“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot
change anything.” Said Bernard Shaw, a nineteenth-century playwright (Stubbs, 2009). Despite
the timelessness of the advice given the author, many people still struggle to change their ways
to enable progress. People prefer to remain in a position in which things are clear rather than
embrace change and suffer the lack clarity that comes with it. In other words, many people prefer
to have an apparent future that results from remaining in a stalemate rather than embrace change
and in the process increase uncertainty. However, the truth is that, just like Shaw said, change is
necessary for growth. People should implement the correct steps when initiating change to make
those who are resistant to embrace it gradually as it comes. Therefore, the paper will base on the
example of Mark, an employee in a company who was resistant to change leading to him losing
his job. The factors that led to his resistance to change will also be discussed. Then to understand
what could have been done to enable Mark embrace change, the paper will also examine the
Kotter’s theory for change and use it to create a plan to help Mark embrace change.
Mark’s Case
Mark had worked for an auto repair company for seven years when his bosses fired him
for being adamant to follow instructions from a new boss. When he was asked why he was fired,
Mark explained that he did not trust the management and therefore could not embrace the new
