ASSIGNMENT
Exercises 12.4.
6. Write equations for the following “balance” displays. A black dot represents 1.
a)
Since in the left side of the balance there are 3 x-boxes and 2 black dots, we have for that
side of the equation the following expression:
3𝑥 + 2
On the other hand, in the right side of the balance there is 1 x-box and there are 10 black
dots. For that side of the equation we have the following expression:
𝑥 + 10
Then, the equation for that balance displays would be:
𝟑𝒙 + 𝟐 = 𝒙 + 𝟏𝟎
b)
Since in the left side of the balance there is 1 x-box and there are 7 black dots, we have
for that side of the equation the following expression:
𝑥+7
On the other hand, in the right side of the balance there is 1 black dot and there are 4 xboxes. For that side of the equation we have the following expression:
4𝑥 + 1
Then, the equation for that balance displays would be:
𝒙 + 𝟕 = 𝟒𝒙 + 𝟏
8. Complete the following additions side by side as shown in the examples, and explain how
they are alike:
The two examples are similar since they can be expressed in the same way (with the same
coefficients and a constant or unknown value). When comparing the two examples, it can be
seen that for exercise a), the number '10' plays the same role as the variable ...
