Introduction
Culture plays a critical role in being a source of identity for a group of people. When one
wants to understand a group of people, a study of their cultural practices such as language plays a
critical role in that regard (Larsin & Ngo, 2017). The primary purpose of this paper is to describe
the cultural practices of the people of Lesotho, whose majority belong to a group of people called
Basotho, and they can be identified using their Sesotho language. Just like many other groups of
people, many Basotho people live and work outside their country. However, they still hold their
cultural practices closely. These people have a great attachment to the village setting that
characterizes the life of many of them. Thus, it will not always take long for one to identify the
Basotho people since their village settings will easily make them identifiable. However,
urbanization has brought a lot of changes in the life of this group of people. There are some of
them who have become urbane, sophisticated, and they speak more of the English language than
the national Sesotho language. This study will, in the long run, make it possible to have an indepth understanding of the cultural practices that define this group of people.
