Question Description

I’m working on a Political Science exercise and need support.

Question

Q: Citizen Responsibility:

People in the United States are often criticized for their lack of interest in and awareness of political issues.   However, the federal system places a heavy burden of responsibility on citizens.   To be fully informed, citizens must follow issues at the federal, state, and local levels of government and also pay attention to election campaigns for offices as varied as the presidency and county commissioner.  Consider the impact of the federal system on an individual's capacity to operate as a responsible citizen.   What changes in the federal system might facilitate the exercise of citizen responsibility?  Work with each other please. Interact.

As  Americans we are responsible to support and defend the constitution and participate in the democratic process.  The constitution gave the federal government more power, so as citizens we need to participate and stay informed of issues in our society.  Accordng to Thomas Jefferson. "The function of schools as places where responsibility would be taught -an expressed hope of several of the Framers of the Constitution, John Dickinson among them- has been ignored." (Jefferson, Thomas Jan. 16, 1787).  The influence of school teachers and clergy and a sense of responsiblity has dimished.  In schools students need to read the history of the Constitution and American politics.  If students can study real historical people and politics, they may realize what they can understand  in this country.  Also, moral responsibilty in their neighborhood and charities.  Communities can build coalitions to solve problems on the local, state, federal levels to get people to participate.  According to Dahl. "We are not just asking why people now support democracy, or why they have supported it in the past, or how democratic systems have come about.  People may favor democracy without thinking much about why they do, in their time and place, giving lip service to democracy may just be the conventional or traditional thing to do."(Dahl, p.29, 1998). I think as citizens we need to take resposibility for democracy.
