Abstract

In this paper, we review research on product design in the broad domain of business
studies. We highlight established and emerging perspectives and lines of inquiry, and
organize them around three core areas, corresponding to different stages of the design
process (design activities, design choices, design results). We identify and discuss avenues
for further research at the intersection of these bodies of research. We argue that
management scholars possess conceptual and methodological tools suited to enrich design
research and to pursue lines of investigation effectively. Only partially addressed by other
communities, such as the construction and deployment of design capabilities, or the
organizational and institutional context of design activities.

1.0 Introduction
Facemasks used to be the only worm by clinical practitioners when handling the sick for
safety precautions, but due to the emergent of the coronavirus; has not only the recognition for
facemasks plummed but also a business opportunity opened up. After the epidemic attacked, a lot
of business suffered a significant loss for no production could take place due to safety restrictions.
Those that are business-oriented saw something useful from the disaster, hence the introduction of
facemasks business. Many firms have invested in the production of facemasks, causing an increase
in competition for the market. With increased competition, the only way for a company that
produces facemasks to survive; then it has to access a reasonable market share. Implementing
good production plans is not enough to effectively capture market share with such fierce
competition experienced. The best strategy to be applied is the differentiation strategy. It is creating
a product that can easily be differentiated from those of other firms, at an acceptable cost while
meeting the customers'' expectations.
