government to admit defeat in World War II. Japan formally surrendered on September 2,
1945. The South Sakhalin and the Kuril islands returned to the control of the Soviet Union and
Taiwan and Manchuria in China. The Pacific islands remained under US occupation. General
Douglas MacArthur was appointed supreme commander of the US occupation of postwar
Japan (1945-1952).
