Project Execution
In the simplest term, project management is the organization and planning of a company's
resources to support the completion of a particular event, task, or duty. Proper execution of
project management activities is beneficial to a company since it helps in promoting its success.
On the contrary, undertaking the wrong project management tasks leads to project failure. With
this in mind, this paper analyzes a case regarding the implementation activities of an ERP system
in Custom Engineering Solutions, a medium-sized company. In an overview, the case is an
example of poor project management activities, which means that the paper aims to elaborate on
the factors that led to poor project execution in the company. Furthermore, this paper analyzes
the consequences of poor activities and provides recommendations regarding management,
monitoring, and risk mitigation to assist the company in properly setting up the ERP solution.
Custom Engineering Solutions (CES) had valid reasons for implementing an ERP system
into the company. The objective was to improve the success of the company by integrating its
two divisions. However, implementing the task proved difficult for the organization due to the
adoption of poor practices and issues among the employees. One of the issues that led to poor
execution was delayed implementation. On this matter, ECS, the division tasked with project
implementation, began working on the ERP system in April 2008, which was four months after
the set date. The factor led to a poor execution since it resulted in speedy processes that focused
on completing the project within the time allocated (Xu, Rondeau & Mahenthiran, 2011).
Starting the implementation process in April left the company with only two months since the
CES aimed to "go live" with the ERP in July 2008.
Furthermore, implementing the ERP system was full of management issues that led to
poor execution. An administrative issue that affected the company was micromanagement since

the CFO required the IT manager to report before executing anything. Micromanagement
reduced the manager's decision-making power, leading to bureaucracy and the limited use of
important tools. Since the IT manager had to report and seek permission regarding every
decision from the CFO, the latter did not allow the manager to use systems such as CPM and
PERT that would have assisted in assessing the plan and devising appropriate measures (Xu,
Rondeau & Mahenthiran, 2011). Using these systems would have helped the company decide on
the most appropriate project completion plan after considering factors such as money, time, and
Another issue that led to poor execution was unclear project planning. An unclear plan
led to generalization since the company created a twelve to fifteen list of tasks instead of abiding
by the 126 steps provided by Epicor, the ERP vendor. The conversion of 126 steps into 12-15
tasks meant that the activities were generalized hence increasing the probability of skipping
various tasks. Moreover, using an unclear plan led to last-minute task execution since the case
