Myasthenia Gravis
Definition
Myasthenia gravis is a condition that causes skeleton muscles to become weak. It is an autoimmune
and neuromuscular disease. Myasthenia gravis is a Latin/Greek word that implies "severe muscle
weakness." The condition improves when one takes adequate rest but worsens when one does a
series of activities. The muscles affected by myasthenia gravis disease are those connected with
moving and breathing body parts, including arms, hands, neck, and legs. Though the cure is not
yet known, the existing therapies have helped many victims to improve their condition. These
therapies control myasthenia gravis signs and enable individuals to live a desirable quality life.
Symptoms
The main symptom of myasthenia gravis is when the muscles weaken and worsens when the victim
undertakes a series of activities and improves when the victim takes adequate rest. The most
affected muscles include but are not limited to those that control the facial expression, eye, eyelid
movement, talking, chewing, and swallowing. The degree of muscle weakness also differs
significantly among people.
Individuals with the disorder experience the following:
•
Weakness in the arms, legs, hands, fingers, and neck
•
A change in facial expression
•
Eye muscle weakness also termed as ocular myasthenia
•
Eyelid dropping, a condition called ptosis
•
Double or blurred vision, also known as a diplopia condition
•
Shortness of breath
•
Difficulty in swallowing

When the disease causes severe muscle weakness, this might lead to respiratory failure, which is
an emergency medical issue.
Myasthenia Crisis
Myasthenia crisis means immediate emergency medical care that happens when patients need a
ventilator to assist them in breathing due to a severe weakening of muscles that control breathing
(Hogan.et.al, 2020). This weakening usually gets triggered by stress, illness, surgery, or a
particular medication. Around twenty percent of individuals with myasthenia experience at least
one myasthenia crisis (Weinberg.et.al, 2019). This crisis might as well be caused by other things
apart from the apparent causes. Some medications have been proved to be among the primary
cause of the problem; however, in cases where it is crucial to treat an underlying illness, the patient
might be forced to continue using the medications.
