Supportive Learning Environment
Creating a supportive learning environment has many benefits
for you and your students. It helps students be feel safe, be
more attentive, less anxious, and to have a healthier attitude
toward learning. As a new teacher, we encourage you
collaborate with veteran teachers, departments and
administrators for support.

The learning environment consists of 3 components:

1. Physical (includes classroom, furniture, arrangement, displays,
accessories)
a. Examples in the classroom:
i. Carefully determine desk placement and
seating arrangements
ii. Arrange the classroom so that the resources needed for an activity are close
to the learning area.
iii. Develop procedures for the handing of equipment and supplies and
communicate your expectations to the students. The physical elements of
light, space, temperature, and noise must be addressed.
iv. Bring nature into the room. Plants and flowers add life to the room and can
improve the air quality.
2. Intellectual (include standards, expectations, objectives, learning strategies, assessments
directly and indirectly through curriculum)
a. Examples in the classroom:
i. 1. Use a variety of teaching strategies to bring interest to the lesson and
reflect respect for students‘ different learning preferences.
ii. Contracts, individualized instruction, and collaborative learning provide for
successful learning by all students.
iii. Assessment strategies should provide an opportunity for all students to
demonstrate what they have learned in the classroom. A variety of techniques
may be needed in order to meet that goal.
iv. The curriculum, including learning objectives, teaching strategies, student
engagement, and assessment must focus on the needs of the students and the
