The Crucible Critical Review
The American Playwright, Arthur Miller, wrote the play, The Crucible which was a
partially fictionalized and dramatized story of the witch trials in Salem. The trials took place in
Massachusetts in 1692, whereby the accusations revolved around people who were accused of
witchcraft. The play was first published and performed in 1953 at the Martin Beck Theatre,
whereby Jed Harris was the director. When Reverend Parris, Salem’s minister, finds his niece,
Abigail, his daughter Betty, and the slave, Tituba, dancing in the forest, rumors of witchcraft
spread in the large town crowd gathered at his house. Parris tries to calm the public, and they
start singing, but Betty breaks into screams, which leads to an argument that she has been
possessed by witchcraft. Reverend Hale, an expert in detecting witchcraft, arrives and makes
Tituba, Abigail, and Betty confess by listing other witches' names. Later on, the province's
deputy governor charges the people with witchcraft, and witch trials occur, causing riots and
anger in nearby towns. Proctor, Elizabeth's husband, agrees to confess to save her life, but when
the court insists that the confession be made public, he retracts his guilt admission despite Hales
Pleas. Proctor proceeds to the gallows, and...
