Environmental hazards for children under the age of 2
Children’s vulnerability to environmental hazards is closely linked to their
developmental stage (Needham & Sexton, 2000). The hazards can be categorized under
physical, biological, and social environment.
Typically, children under two years are
characterised by limited physical and cognitive development. A good example of how this
places them at risk is their inability to move away from sustained exposure from harmful
agents or from hazardous environments. Conversely, the ability to walk as is common in two
year toddlers, can increase potential for harm, like walking into a busy motorway.
