Introduction
Poverty refers to the condition of not having the basic needs of life and lack of access to
essential services like healthcare (Bourguignon & Chakravarty, 2019). Poverty is a continuous
challenge world over even in the United States (Desmond & Western, 2018. There are many
causes of poverty and most of these are essentially the same across the world just with different
severity and also the approaches taken by different countries towards poverty eradication are not
the same depending on the needs and priority. America is not left out and the American
government fights poverty year in year out using different policies, strategies, and approaches
(Karnani, 2016).
Causes of poverty in America include but are not limited to factors such as lack of proper
income, inequality, poor education, climate change, and government's bureaucracy or limited
capacity in government, lack of reserves, and the challenges associated with inadequate
infrastructure (Montz & Hagelman, 2017). Causes of poverty are interrelated in one way or the
other and there exists no one approach that works perfectly right in the eradication of poverty;
because poverty can never be eliminated to a zero poverty rate (Iceland & Hernandez, 2017).
