Ethics and Juvenile Law
The discussion about the balance between what is ethical and what is legal has been going on
for centuries. We have appointed lawmakers whose job it is to deem what acts are punishable by law,
the punishment levied and at what age is a perpetrator able to be tried for murder as an adult. There
used to be some gray area regarding this question but by 1997 most states had a provision to try anyone
over thirteen years old as an adult depending on the severity of the crime and if they were a repeat
offender. (Lash, 2011) Now there are often legal battles just to determine how a juvenile will be
charged, tried and sentenced. The ethics involved and the facts to be considered before making a
decision is the focus of this discussion.
