Description

The purpose of this assignment is to analyze how an organization's quality and improvement processes contribute to its risk management program.

This assignment builds on the Risk Management Program Analysis – Part One assignment you completed in Topic 1 of this course.

Assume that the sample risk management program you analyzed in Topic 1 was implemented and is now currently in use by your health care employer/organization. Further assume that your supervisor has asked you to create a high‐level summary brief of this new risk management program to share with a group of administrative personnel from a newly created community health organization in your state who has enlisted your organization's assistance in developing their own risk management policies and procedures.

Compose a 1,250‐1,500 word summary brief that expands upon the elements you first addressed in the Topic 1 assignment. In this summary brief, address the following points regarding your health care organization and its risk management program:

  1. Explain the role of your organization's MIPPA-approved accreditation body (e.g., JC, ACR, IAC) in the evaluation of your institution's quality improvement and risk management processes.
  2. Describe the roles that different levels of administrative personnel play in healthcare ethics and establishing or sustaining employer/employee-focused organizational risk management strategies and operational policies.
  3. Illustrate how your organization's risk management and compliance programs support ethical standards, patient consent, and patient rights and responsibilities.
  4. Explain the legal and ethical responsibilities health care professionals face in upholding risk management policies and administering safe health care at your organization.
  5. Relate how your organization's quality improvement processes support and contribute to its overall journey to excellence.

In addition to your textbook, you are required to support your analysis with a minimum of three peer‐reviewed references.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

Running head: RISK MANAGEMENT PLAN ANALYSIS Risk Management Plan Analysis Jonathan Garcia Grand Canyon University 09-19-20 1 RISK MANAGEMENT PLAN ANALYSIS 2 Risk Management Plan Analysis The healthcare system is facing a challenge of increased cases of falls and injuries, which affects health professionals and patients' safety. Inadvertent injuries have caused deaths, body harms, and long-term fractures, which tend to have adverse effects on the patients and workers and negatively impact the reputation of a healthcare institution. More than 37 million falls have been recorded in the healthcare system each year, which causes fatalities and long-term injuries affecting patients and healthcare workers. Also, more than 646,000 individuals have died due to falls and injuries in healthcare facilities across the globe (Johnston et al., 2019). 80% of the deaths have been reported from developing countries, indicating the need for a risk management program to improve the healthcare environment that prevents the risks of injuries and falls. Risk management programs are needed in the healthcare system to direct the measures to reduce the rising cases of injuries and falls (Currie, 2018). The focus will be based on the analysis of a risk management plan deemed effective in improving the healthcare system environment for health workers and patients' safety. Summary of the Risk Management Plan to Prevent Falls and Injuries in Healthcare Settings The risk management program was created to enhance healthcare workers' and patients' safety and protection in a healthcare institution. The risk management plan aims to present directions and safety precautions required by healthcare leaders, the infrastructure, and the use of medical facilities such as machines, cleaning items, and building structures to protect the health workers' and patients' safety. For instance, the risk management program helped prepare the RISK MANAGEMENT PLAN ANALYSIS 3 Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries STEADI tool aimed at preventing falls and injures of the elderly patients and workers within a healthcare facility (Johnston et al., 2019). The program helps develop a tool used to promote fall risk screening and the presentation of community-based fall prevention resources. The rationale for selecting the fall and injury prevention program was based on evaluating the increased cases of falls and injuries in the healthcare setting, which has caused increased rates of long-term injuries and fatalities of patients and healthcare workers (de Souza et al., 2019). Also, the program aimed at enhancing the universal precautions and schedules of rounding protocols, assessment of fall risk factors, care planning and interventions of preventing falls, clinical review, and root cause analysis, which helped in understanding the causes, effects, and prevention strategies (Currie, 2018). The healthcare organizations that have implemented the falls and injuries risk management programs have benefited from reducing the rates of long-term injuries and fatalities affecting the patients and healthcare workers. The program has also helped maintain a positive reputation of the healthcare institution in the improved care of patients and the safety of the employees. Risk Management Standards in Regulating Falls and Injuries in Healthcare Settings The risk management program's primary role is connected to the prevention of falls and injuries of patients and healthcare workers in a healthcare institution (de Souza et al., 2019). The risk management plan implements and follows the guidelines of the accrediting body's standards that provide incentives and regulations for protecting the patients and the healthcare workers. For instance, the required standards indicate that the risk management program should accommodate patient care procedures, medical staff protection, non-medical staff protection, project risk management elements, facility management, and safety procedures (Bruce et al., 2017). The standards will also incorporate the approaches of protecting the premises, such as the RISK MANAGEMENT PLAN ANALYSIS 4 involvement of HAZMAT procedures, medical equipment maintenance, fire safety, emergency tools, and a plan to accommodate for injuries and falls within the premises (Gu et al., 2016). The precautions will incorporate the guidelines and adherence of Medical Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA), which helps enforce the federal and state laws governing the safety of patients and healthcare workers. Agencies Responsible for the Prevention of Falls and Injuries in Healthcare System The success of the risk management plan is connected to government and nongovernmental agencies that regulate the functionality of the healthcare organizations. The governing bodies of agencies help monitor the quality of care provided and the approaches used in preventing falls and injuries of patients and healthcare workers. For instance, the Agency for Health Research and Quality (AHRQ) and The Joint Commission (JCAHO) has the mandate of protecting the safety of patients and healthcare workers due to the increased risks of injuries within the health facilities (Grossman et al., 2018). JCAHO has the role of seeking to continuously improve the healthcare system based on collaboration with stakeholders in enhancing the provision of safe, effective, and high-quality health services. JCAHO also evaluates the functionality and the safety measures provided by healthcare institutions before accreditation based on the alignment of safety procedures and the medical infrastructure (Westle, Burkert & Paulus, 2019). The infrastructure and risk management programs should accommodate the safety measures required to protect patients and healthcare workers in reducing the risks of injuries. Also, AHRQ works towards evaluating healthcare institutions to assess patients and healthcare workers (Grossman et al., 2018). AHRQ further demonstrates the agency's purpose in directing the healthcare institutions in adhering to the safety guidelines that help protect patients and health workers. Therefore, both agencies have a positive impact on the RISK MANAGEMENT PLAN ANALYSIS 5 risk management program directed to prevent the risks of falls and injuries based on the protection of patients and healthcare employees. Risk Management Plan in Addressing Privacy and Safety of Health Workers and Patients The risk management program has aimed at implementing the standards of health agencies in advocating for the safety of patients and health workers. The agencies such as MIPPA, AHRQ, and JCAHO have outlined the practical procedures that address the privacy and safety of the health workers and patients (Grossman et al., 2018). For instance, the Patient Safety Organizations welcomes the introduction and discussions concerning identifying emerging vulnerabilities that can pose risks in the clinical environment. The agencies have also helped in outlining the procedures that would be crucial in analyzing the medical errors in improving patient safety (Westle, Burkert & Paulus, 2019). The agencies further provide a platform for learning about patients' and health workers’ safety and the importance of privacy in developing a healthcare facility's favorable reputation. Recommendations for Patients and Health Workers’ Safety The risk management plan incorporates the approaches of improving the safety and protection of patients and health workers in reducing the risks of falls and injuries. However, the risk management program has outlined recommendations that would improve patients' and healthcare workers' safety. For example, the healthcare institution should establish a safety and health management system, formulate guidelines and procedures of promoting safety and protection (Morris & O’Riordan, 2017). The healthcare institutions should create a rapid response system that would cater for the cases of falls and injuries within the medical premises. Education and training should also be introduced to create awareness of safety precautions. The healthcare institutions should use signs and posters of the areas that are considered high risk to RISK MANAGEMENT PLAN ANALYSIS 6 warn the users. For instance, the areas should have posters such as “slippery floors and cleaning in progress,” which are deemed crucial in warning the users of the floors and staircases. The safety compliance program will help in preventing falls and injuries in the health facility. Other factors should include effective communication channels, safe hospital designs, and the use of monitoring technology, help vulnerable patients in movements, and promote a team-work atmosphere (Morris & O’Riordan, 2017). The procedures will help prevent falls and injuries and improve the safety and protection of the patients and healthcare workers.
