f(x)=2.5x^3-2x^2+4x from [-2,5] find the average rate of change for the given functions

Oct 4th, 2014

f(x)=2.5x^3-2x^2+4x from [-2,5]

For x = -2 , then

f(-2) = 2.5(-2)^3 - 2(-2)^2 + 4(-2)

       = 2.5 * (-8) - 2*4 - 8

       = - 20 - 8 - 8

       = - 36

Now for x = 5  , then

f(5) = 2.5(5)^3 - 2(5)^2 + 4(5)

       = 2.5 * 125 - 2 * 25 + 20

       = 312.5 - 50 + 20

       = 282.5

Now average is    [ f(-2) + f(5) ] / 2

                         =  (- 36 + 282.5)/2

                         = 246.5 / 2

                         = 123.25
