Description

WRITE 1200 WORDS AND 3 SCHOLARLY SOURCES.......NO PLAGIARISM

1. Describe genetic engineering on a cellular level. In other words, what exactly takes place during genetic engineering that inserts a trait into an organism that did not have that trait before? Give an example.

2. According to the course materials, what made someone or a group of people considered to be "unfit" members of society? Based on your research, are there any categories or types of people we systematically marginalize today?

3. What is Eugenics and what were the goals and policies of the American Eugenics movement?

4. Which cells do the authors identify as the ones most likely to hold the key to increased human longevity and vitality and how might this work?
Describe one alternative to cloning that the authors mention.

5. What are some arguments against extending human life in the way the authors describe?

Please describe at least one objection mentioned in the reading and one objection from your research and experience.

Answer 1: Describe Genetic Engineering
Genetic engineering refers to the artificial manipulation, modification, and use of the
recombinant DNA technology to change the genetic makeup of an organism or population of
organisms. It involves manually adding new DNA to a given organism to add unique traits or
characteristics not found in that organism (Divan and Royds, 2016). It involves changing one
base pair or deleting the whole DNA to introduce a new copy of a gene or extracting the DNA
from an organism's genome and then combining it with that organism's DNA. Genetic engineers
must choose the gene they want to add, modify, or delete during genetic engineering. Then they
can extract the genes from the organism that contains the desired traits where gene cloning
follows. Plants are examples of the things that have gone through the genetic engineering
process(Divan and Royds, 2016). Plants are adjusted to have the ability to fix nitrogen in the
soil and to be able to correct genetic disease by replacing the genes that are dysfunctional with
genes that are functioning normally. Genetic engineering is now applied in various fields such
as medicine, research, and agriculture to improve crops and other industrial chemicals. Today
they are several crops and fruits that have been genetically modified.
Answer 2: What made Someone or a Group of People Considered to be “Unfit
Members of a Society
In the past, people were marginalized and regarded as unfit society members, depending
on their mental capacity, physical appearance, and intelligence level. People who had
disabilities or insane were considered not part of the community, and they got discriminated
against. A person or group of people who had a mental illness or feeble-minded was regarded to
be unfit members of society. It was believed that these people posed a threat to society. The
