Work Experience Report The final report is to be approximately 3500 words long.. The report is an individual effort based on your work placement – not a group report. The report should consist of: (i) Title Page - author’s name & ID number, Construction Industry Organisation Name, Title of the report, the unit number and name, the department and university, the date of submission (ii) Table of contents – sufficiently detailed to cover all aspects of the report transparently (iii) Summary (iv) Introduction to the particular industry organisation, the organisational and management structure of the industry organisation, and your involvement. Introduction to the project/s. If you are involved in more than one, you need to describe all of them. Outlines the structure of the report (v) Your involvement (e.g. tendering, cost estimation, discussions) during the period (vi) The construction technology(s) used and the decisions which led to its choice (s). (vii) The types of contracts under which the projects are being undertaken (viii) How construction costs are controlled and the nature of the financial reporting. (ix) Problems identified in project/s and how solved them (x) Project management plan - show your involvement (xi) Involvement of site meetings, recording of minutes of the meetings. Your involvement in decisions making (xii) Your role in site supervision (xiii) OHS issues in the organisations. Site inductions you received (xiv) Attach any relevant drawings, plans photos (xv) Environmental management plan- How any environmental issues are handled (xvi) Conclusions-What you learnt, your comments on organisation (xvii) Letter from the industry organisation states the length of time of your employment and the activities and construction project (s) you were involved (xviii) Appendices Any diagrams or photographs included must relate specifically to a particular point made in the text and should preferably be included close to the relevant section. Do not include photographs or drawings merely for decoration.

Summary
This work experience report is written to provide a summary of the work experience that I have
had and thus showing that I have been gained the required understanding and knowledge to
undertake more projects in the field. It also demonstrates that I have been equipped with the right
skills for engineering work. Further, it proves that I am qualified to be registered as a member of
the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (APEG). It also shows that I have
gained the necessary experience both in width and in depth for me to practice in the field
(Blunden, 2012).
The report aims to describe in detail the different projects that I oversaw in the course of my
employment with various companies. Each of the job opportunities that have been explained in
the report shows exactly how the work has pushed me to satisfy the engineering experience
guidelines such as the application of theoretical principles to real-life problems, gaining practical
experience to carry out different tasks in the field, the management capabilities, communication
skills, considerations of social implications of engineering in all the projects that I was involved
in, as well as sustainability of the projects I got involved in.
The report will summarize my involvement in the project, the technologies used and their
justifications, the strategies put in place to control the costs and finances of the project, the
problems identified in a projects and their solutions, site involvement and supervision in the
project, issues of health and safety, drawings and photos, the environmental management plan of
the projects, and the conclusion of each project.
Introduction

WORK EXPERIENCE REPORT

5

In 2005, I started my mechanical engineering career as a systems design trainee in a company
known as Young Engineering Inc. on contractual basis for two years. I got promoted to be a
permanent employee in 2007. By this time, I had just freshly graduated from college with a
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering from Purdue University. After
the completion of those two years, I went back to the university to pursue my Master’s Degree in
Building and Construction Engineering and completed in 2009. I have also continued to work in
Young Engineering Inc. during this time to ensure that I continue to gain experience and skills
that are required in the building industry.
Young Engineering is a systems design consultancy and contracting company that has been a
key player in the sector since 2001. It is owned by two people who serve to the company as
directors. It has five managers heading the five departments in the enterprise. 15 supervisors lead
the 15 branches that the company has opened. I serve in the company as liaison manager. This
position gives me the responsibility of being the liaison between the top management and the
employees in my department and ensuring the designs and drawings that leave the department
meet the standard requirements of engineering products.
The past seven years have been very instrumental in ensuring I have acquired immense
experience because I have worked on very many projects. These projects started with simple
design projects, and now I have built enough experience to carry out diverse tasks in this field.
My competency is founded on the training and skills that I have acquired in the course of my
career. Both the formative and non-formative expertise and training have been very crucial in the
far that I have come. Regardless of the many years of experience, every day presents me
numerous opportunities to learn. My colleagues have been very supportive and informative about
different things in the building and construction industry.

In the next pages, the details of some of the projects that I have been involved in, describing
the tasks that I carry out in my daily routine at my workplace adhering to the criteria of
competence (Blunden, 2012).

Westside Middle School Library

In this project, I took the task of designing the mechanical systems of the entire block. I worked
with other design experts in this project of designing and building a library block for Westside
Middle School. The design is one of the most important elements when it comes to creating a
new building. Together with the other professionals who were also assigned to this project, we
established the complexities that were involved in the design of this library block, applied our
knowledge and skill and built a beautiful building that the school has been using for the past five
years (Pahl & Beitz, 2013).
I prepared the sketches so that the client could view them and approve them. I then went ahead to
draw and document the detailed architectural drawings, analyzing design, detailed instructions. I
also calculated the quality and quantity of materials that was going to be used in the building of
the library block. I also went to the site to make sure the specifications for the building are
adhered to. I was also the one left with the responsibility of examining codes and evaluating the
design specifications arithmetically (Pahl & Beitz, 2013).

I was also involved in the installation process of the designs that I had already designed into the
block. I used the technologies that had been employed in numerous other projects to come up
with a workable solution that would be cheap and efficient. I preferred to go with the techniques
of the older days because they are more stable since they have been tried and tested for so many
years in the market. These technologies are also cheaper, and they work as well as the new
technologies. I anticipated future development and allowed for space for more HVAC systems to
be installed as a result of high populations at the school but still implemented old technologies.
To control the costs incurred during the project, I used the old, much cheaper technologies that
were effective to bring down the costs of the systems to be purchased. Also, instead of spending
money on collecting data that could be used for the establishment of mechanical parameters used
for the design of mechanical systems in construction settings, I used the data that was stored in
the archives, thereby saving a lot of resources. The project had quite some issues, including the
inability to balance the concepts of airflow, heat, and temperatures, although...
