Description

Reflect on what you noticed as theoretically different between Piaget's ideas and Vygotsky's. Explain at least one difference and try to give an example of what this would look like in the classroom.

Your initial post is due Friday, 10/2. Your reply is due Sunday, 10/4. You must complete both parts to get the full 10 points for the assignment. Your reply can be to yourself or another student.

For your reply discuss your preference in theoretical viewpoints. In my teaching and research I use ideas from both Piaget and Vygotsky, but when having in-depth discussions about learning with colleagues I do tend to rationalize based on one! It fits my experiences teaching and my informal theory of learning. Take a minute to reply with which idea(s) you find most useful in guiding your thinking about early childhood and a very quick reason why.

Responses to the following:

  • When I think about the differences between Vygotsky and Piaget, I see how they differed in explaining how children learn. Vygotsky believed in instruction and guidance, and Piaget believed it was through self-exploration. I would see these two different styles apparent in the classroom through observation. Seeing Vygotsky’s view at a school would be a teacher doing an activity with a small group of children explaining how to grow a garden. This would be shown to children of how to plant seeds, water them, and then to weed the garden. Whereas with Paget’s view, the teacher would just let them explore a garden and try to have the children figure out how to make things grow with their thinking and previous knowledge. Piaget would suggest that a child learning about gardening would only learn it when they were ready and interested in that, but Vygotsky would use this activity and scaffold the learning of children by piquing their interest and promoting their development through learning new things. I tend to agree more with Vygotsky’s ideas as I believe children generally have some formal ideas and thoughts about things because of their immediate surroundings or cultures, and it plays a role in how children learn and process new and old information. I also believe that in the early childhood classroom, his ideas are useful when helping children learn more about their world by building on their knowledge and skills. I also think that scaffolding plays a big part in this field as it is a way we guide children through their learning.
  • In my classroom I will give an example on one our September themes, exploring our world using our five sense, if I would apply Piaget theory I would have different materials laid out for children to explore. I would have different textures, weight, smells and so forth. This would allow the children to explore the differences among the objects using their senses. In Vygotsky theory I would take it a step further, I would label each object to increase vocabulary, I would scaffold the child's current knowledge and use scaffolding to reach their zone of proximal development. I will use my knowledge to assist the child in acquiring new knowledge that otherwise have been missed. With the new information the child has gathered he can implemented this with his classroom peers this will allowed children to work together as a community to build ideas and gain deeper knowledge.

Lev Vygotsky's theory and Piaget's theory explain a child's cognitive development
differently. Vygotsky focused on social and cultural interactions. He explains that a child gains
speech techniques from his surroundings and influences how they think.. He explains that a
child's development is influenced by how a child interacts with the environment. The use of both
theories in class is essential. To educate the children on maintaining their hands' hygiene, I
would demonstrate how to wash their hands effectively, then let them do it y themselves. By
doing so, I would be using the Vygotsky theory since I will be ...
