For your final project you will reflect on the question, "Who am I?" using the sociological imagination to understand and explain your everyday experiences. In doing so, you will look at the impact of social forces on your individual life. This requires you to apply the concepts, theories, and applicable sociological understandings that you have encountered in the course.

To successfully complete this assignment, you will write a paper with these components:

  • Introduction: Introduce yourself and what you plan on discussing in your paper.
  • Culture and Socialization: Examine the impact culture and socialization has had on your life. Consider the following when creating this section:
    • How did you develop a sense of self?
    • What agents of socialization had the biggest impact on you? How?
    • How has culture influenced your life?
  • Social Structure and Groups: Discuss the impact social structure and groups have had on your life. Considering the following:
    • How have various groups (primary, secondary, reference, etc.) guided your behavior?
    • What statuses have you held? What roles have you played?
    • How have social hierarchies shaped your life choices?
  • Education: Discuss how a sociologist would explain your experience with education. In doing so, consider the following:
    • What major functions have education had for you?
    • How has education been related to your life outcomes?
    • What experiences with inequality have you had in education?

  • Summary: Briefly summarize the issues you discussed in the paper.
  • Bibliography: Your analysis in each section should be supported by sociological concepts and course materials. You may also seek outside materials to support your analysis. A bibliography or works-cited page is required, in APA format. It should contain all the references that you used in the project. Your bibliography should include all materials you directly quote, all materials you paraphrase, and any materials you might refer to. Remember that using information created by other people without properly crediting them constitutes plagiarism. This includes Internet materials. Do not forget to include a full citation for any Web site you have used.
  • Be sure to address any issues related to inequality or stratification as they apply to the various sections.

The concept that I will explain in the first part which is how culture and socialization have impacted on my life is values, language, and norms. In the second part, I am going to discuss how social structures and groups have affected my life, and in this part, I will touch on the concepts such as hierarchy in society and roles. In the third part, I am going to discuss on the way in which a sociologist would explain my experience with learning. I will finally discuss how technology and media have impacted on my life in which the concepts that I am going to touch on are social change and media. Culture and Socialization Culture has extensively been defined as the customs, beliefs, and arts of a particular group, society or a place (Brislin, 1993). It is also a manner of thinking, working or behaving in a given location. Socialization has been used by the sociologists to refer to the all-time process of inheriting and disseminating norms, values, customs and ideologies that provide an individual with habits and skills necessary in a given field of place. Socialization may not be realized, but it assists us in developing a way in which people develop feelings, perceptions, and the beliefs. I have been affected by socialization and culture in many ways. Culture shas had major impacts in my daily life, likewise to socialization. The norms and values that are practiced in culture have shaped my life in various ways. I grew up in a place where there were no skyscrapers, cars, traffic lights and major roads. I grew up and only had to make interactions with my family members and neighbors. When I first went to a city, it was hard to comprehend and catch up with the life in a city or an urban center. This was a new environment to me and adapting to it was hard. Environment shapes the SOCIOLOGICAL CONCEPTS 3 socialization of a person, like what it did to me that I never had that perception of how people live in cities. Communicating with people in an urban environment was difficult to me because this person has their culture especially their mode of dressing was new and strange to me. It is not only an individual that is affected by culture and socialization but also the society as a whole (Merton, 1968). Social Structure and Organization The organizations of social positions and how people are distributed in them is what is called the social structure. It is a way in which the society is organized in predictable relationships (Venkatesh & Morris, 2000). A good example of a social fabric is the way people are organized in terms or hierarchies based on their educational qualifications and skills. The social structure has impacted on my life in a way that I have had to work hard to be grouped in the highest rank in the social fabric of the society. People in the high-class level in the community are well respected and live in palatial homes unlike people of lower classes in the society who are found in slums. It is a norm in any culture or a society that individuals of highest levels in the society are respected and honored. Technology and Media Technology and media have significant vital roles my life that includes social change. Technology has enabled people to communicate and exchange ideas from different regions and as a result led to a change of ideas that have impacted on the social stratification (Flew, 2007). Through media, new cultures have been adopted into the society, and these new cultures and norms have been adopted and accepted. For instance, mode of dressing and language use are among the most exchanged. SOCIOLOGICAL CONCEPTS 4 Professional Field The sociological concepts that are affecting my field are like culture and stereotype. Culture plays a major role in most of professional fields. It is as a result of some individuals has different cultures that are affecting or have impacts on their work places. Education In the field of education, the social stereotype has existed, and it is because of how people have perceived themselves. Most individuals would see themselves as more inferior than the others, and as a result, they lack the confidence to express themselves. A sociologist would explain my experience on education based on social stratification and stereotypes that exist in society. SOCIOLOGICAL CONCEPTS 5 References Brislin, R. (1993). Personal Sociology

The physical, natural, and living environment that surrounds the individual shapes growth
and development of any human being. My personal growth history is not any different; growing
up as a young child, interaction with the neighborhood kids greatly influenced my perception of
things. I am not an introvert, and therefore have no limits in communication. I express myself in
a freeway without any fear. The sociological aspects of our lives had had some significant roles
in dictating the direction that my life has taken. These aspects are not only essential in shaping
the individual but also they make a great component of the society. This paper dwells on the
impact of sociological issues on my personality.
Developing a sense of self is a gradual process that improves as the year's progress. The
pace of this discovery improves once the adolescent stage is attained. Aggressiveness sets. My
self-discovery journey began with the realization that I could make some personal decisions that
were questionable by my parents. At the age of 10, the feeling of individualism started setting in.
I felt more important to myself than my friends did. At times, my friend would not accept me for
my perception of issues, because I felt that my interest should come first above the rest. Back
home my parents allowed me in all aspects. At puberty, there was a little confusion about loyalty
to parent’s direction and pressure to do what my friend did. These were often contrary to my
parent's advice. The combination of the two forces created a sense of self-belonging ad I was
able to think through what my lie was.
Socialization is one of the critical aspects that influence adult human life at early stages
of growth. Socializing is a lifetime process exposes an individual to social expect...
