Course Project Task 3

Note: This course has major project assignments that will be due in Weeks 3 and 5. It will take more than a week's effort to adequately complete them. Plan time to start the research and other work for those assignments earlier than the week in which they are due.

Alibaba is China’s—and by some measures, the world’s—biggest online commerce company. Its three main sites—Taobao, Tmall, and Alibaba.com—have hundreds of millions of users, and host millions of merchants and businesses. Alibaba handles more business than any other e-commerce company.

Begin your paper by briefly summarizing key details about the Alibaba organization, including its purpose and vision. Your summary should be clear enough that anyone could pick up your paper and get a basic understanding of the organization.

Next, analyze the strategic profile of Alibaba, including the following issues:

  • Identify the business strategy Alibaba seems to be following internationally: multi-domestic, global, or transnational? Defend your choice with research, rationale, and appropriate examples.
  • Assess the appropriateness of Alibaba’s strategy.
    • Evaluate the rationale for developing international competitive capabilities.
    • Distinguish among the alternative methods of international market entry that are available to Alibaba, including the strengths and weaknesses of each option. Assess whether Alibaba is utilizing the best method.
    • Distinguish among the organizational structures used to implement the three-alternative international corporate strategies. Assess whether Alibaba’s choice of structure aligns with their chosen strategy.

Finally, summarize two or three important take-aways from your research into Alibaba. In essence, what did you learn and what strategic development and implementation lessons might you apply?

Submission Details:

  • Present your analysis as a 4–5-page report in a Microsoft Word document formatted in APA style.

Outline for: Course Project 3
Task: Alibaba Group of Companies of China
Alibaba Organization Overview
✓ Alibaba is an example of an eCommerce organization situated in China that has attained
global attention recently. The company was founded in 1999, and its headquarters are in
Hangzhou. The corporation's primary purpose is to make it easy for people to conduct
business anywhere, anytime. They enable enterprises to change how they sell, operate,
market, and improve their efficiencies (Wulf, 2016).
Alibaba Strategic Profile-Transnational
✓ There are three international strategies that organizations utilize in their daily
interactions. These strategies include multi-domestic, transnational, and global.
✓ The last strategy is transnational one; a corporation utilizing this approach seeks a middle
ground between a global strategy and a multi-domestic strategy. Such corporations
attempt to balance the desire for sufficiency to cope with local preferences within various
nations (King and Sethi, 2015). Alibaba is an example of a firm that uses a transnational
strategy. While the corporation started in China and stressed on that market, it has also
had a global appeal, in that it would link foreign buyers to China exporters.
Foreign Market Entry Modes
✓ There are multiple ways to jump into a foreign market; they include joint ventures, export
directly, online sales, and licensing agreements.
✓ Alibaba utilizes the Joint Venture entry mode into the international market. Exporting is
faced with transportation costs and restrictive tariffs, and since Alibaba does not sell

products, this mode would be inappropriate. The corporation is currently pursuing wider
global footprints with the help of Joint Ventures (Havinga et al., 2016).
Conclusion and Discussions
✓ In summary, fore Alibaba to enter new markets in Europe, Africa, and the United States,
it has to ensure that it offers more than it is doing now. A significant point I have
acquired from the Alibaba case study above is that transnational enterprise owners can
take advantage of favorable taxation and lower labor costs. The company is not exporting
or selling anything; it only acts as an i...
