Do you have any biases when it comes to this topic? Name & A#: Questions for Sample What is the provenance of the image or text? According to AFP fact Check the image and the text is fake. The image is of Lord William Bentinck and not of Macaulay according to tineye that had many links to Bentinck’s photo including his Wiki page. The text has been cited in a governmental report in India from December 2002 by Dr. S. P. Gupta. What is the image or text trying to argue? That India was idyllic when it continued to use her ancient education system but when the English “broke the backbone” of India and replaced their education with European leaning it resulted in present day chaos. It may also be arguing that if we return to that “pre-invader” ideal that things may get better. Who would be the primary beneficiaries of that argument? Who are the losers? In the case of India, it would likely be non-English speaking Hindu nationalists who would most benefit from targeting English speaking elites as well as non-Hindu others. The main losers would be English speakers and the English educated and possibly westernized Indians as well as minority groups such as Muslims who are seen by nationalists as traitors. What narrative is being furthered by the image/text? The narrative of past purity and return. In addition, by having a martial image for “Macaulay” it seems to stress the violence of colonialism and the cruelty of its policies. The reality is that colonialism was awful but did not have too many moments of hand ringing villainy as implied in the quote above. Was the image/text altered or is it fake? Are the facts in it real? Are they possible? The photo is altered, and the text seems fake. What sources did you use in assessing the veracity of the image? AFP fact Check: the firm hired to do facebook fake news checks. Tineye: most used online reverse image look up [does not make claims of fact but helps you track the image down] Are those sources reliable? How did you check? Name & A#: I did searches on AFP fact check to see who cites them and to see if they are reliable. They seem to be one of the primary sources that facebook uses to fact check – but given the nightmare on facebook they may not be as effective as they claim. The website looks legitimate and I checked 5 other stories to confirm they do actually fact check all these news stories. Their research on the Macaulay image is also detailed Tineye is highly cited as the premiere image search online. Do you have any biases when it comes to this topic? I am likely to believe that colonizers like Macaulay would have said this. But if we read his Minute on Education closely we will see that the perspectives expressed here are not in congress with his other writings. Name & A#: Instructions for Assingment.
