Impact of Beauty Standards of Women Health
In the recent past, cases of young people succumbing to stress, anxiety and depression
while attempting to meet unrealistic beauty standards have been rampant. As the adage says,
“Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” Beauty is subjective and not defined by universally set
standards. In order to fit in a society defined by such standards, many women are striving to
enhance their bodies by using chemicals and undergoing painful cosmetic procedures. Others
have devalued themselves and succumbed to depression. What they forget is that nobody is
perfect, and we are diverse beings with unique physical appearances. By letting ourselves be
guided by such notions, we become less productive and fail to unleash our potential. Beauty
stereotypes have negatively influenced many women, promptings them to develop negative body
image, experience depression and eventually use toxic cosmetics to enhance their appearance.
Young people who feel that they don’t meet beauty standards end up developing negative
body image. Women tend to be very sensitive when it comes to body appearance. And when they
hear people around them say that their bodies don’t meet certain standards, they devalue
themselves. As a result, they lack a sense of self-worth. Without, Self-worth and selfacceptance, it becomes challenging to unleash one’s potential and overcome daily life hurdles.
Self-worth goes hand in hand with self-esteem. With unhealthy self-esteem, there is no
confidence or self-love. The inner belief in oneself slowly fades away, and social anxiety
disorder creeps in. Social anxiety makes people distance themselves from social situations and
meeting new people because of self-consciousness and fear (Zones, 2020). A sociable anxious
woman will fear participating in social events because of the belief that people will have
negative perceptions based on her body shape or skin tone. Therefore, the journey to fighting
against beauty stereotypes starts by accepting our physical appearances and those of others.

Failure to meet the beauty stereotypes has made many young women succumb to
depression. If we fail to appreciate our physical appearance, we will definitely become victims of
depression. Our daily activities are impaired, which results to further depression. Frequent use of
social media has painted the wrong picture into people’s minds. I can recall the photographs of
skinny models I see advertising fragrance and apparel brands. When girls see such photos, they
think that the skinny appearance of these models is the measure of ideal beauty and end up
starving themselves. Consequently, Anorexia Nervosa, a malnutrition ailment that is
characterized by extreme weight loss, becomes part of their lives (Zones, 2020). All this happens
because of the fear of not achieving much in life due to not having the desired level of
attractiveness. I read an article by The Guardian newspaper that informs that 1 in 18 people
aged18 and above had suicidal thoughts due to their body image at one point in their lives
according to a 2019 research by Mental Health Foundation (Guardian, 2019). When feelings of
being worthless occupy the human mind, the urge to commit suicide develops. Also, the
depression caused by beauty stereotypes makes young women indulge in drugs. They feel that
they can’t fit into society without altering their minds through drug and substance abuse, which
is detrimental. If beauty standards have all these consequences, why should we feed our minds
with notions that don’t add value to our lives?
Women are increasingly using multiple toxic cosmetic products daily to achieve the ideal
beauty, which is putting their health at stake. Cosmetics are not bad, but when used excessively
that can have serious heal...
