Description

Summative Assignment: Critique of Research Article

A research critique demonstrates your ability to critically read an investigative study. For this assignment, choose a research article related to nursing or medicine to critique.

  • Articles used for one assignment can't be used for the other assignments (students should find new research articles for each assignment).
  • The selected articles should be original research articles. Review articles, meta-analysis, meta-synthesis, and systemic review should not be used.
  • Mixed-methods studies should not be used.

Your critique should include the following:

Research Problem/Purpose

  • State the problem clearly as it is presented in the report.
  • Have the investigators placed the study problem within the context of existing knowledge?
  • Will the study solve a problem relevant to nursing?
  • State the purpose of the research.

Review of the Literature

  • Identify the concepts explored in the literature review.
  • Were the references current? If not, what do you think the reasons are?

Theoretical Framework

  • Are the theoretical concepts defined and related to the research?
  • Does the research draw solely on nursing theory or does it draw on theory from other disciplines?
  • Is a theoretical framework stated in this research piece?
  • If not, suggest one that might be suitable for the study.

Variables/Hypotheses/Questions/Assumptions

  • What are the independent and dependent variables in this study?
  • Are the operational definitions of the variables given? If so, are they concrete and measurable?
  • Is the research question or the hypothesis stated? What is it?

Methodology

  • What type of design (quantitative, qualitative, and type) was used in this study?
  • Was inductive or deductive reasoning used in this study?
  • State the sample size and study population, sampling method, and study setting.
  • Did the investigator choose a probability or non-probability sample?
  • State the type of reliability and the validity of the measurement tools.
  • Were ethical considerations addressed?

Data Analysis

  • What data analysis tool was used?
  • How were the results presented in the study?
  • Identify at least one (1) finding.

Summary/Conclusions, Implications, and Recommendations

  • What are the strengths and limitations of the study?
  • In terms of the findings, can the researcher generalize to other populations? Explain.
  • Evaluate the findings and conclusions as to their significance for nursing.

The body of your paper should be 4–6 double-spaced pages plus a cover page and a reference page. The critique must be attached to the article and follow APA guidelines.

Scholars, experts, and various other stakeholders in the medical field keep looking for
better ways of handling current, recurring, and possible future issues so that people can have
improved health status. In the dental field, dentists and other scientists have also tried following
the same trend by seeking better ways of handling the dental problems that people face from time
to time. For instance, in “Three Design Concepts of 4-Implants Assisted Mandibular Complete
Overdentures: Implant Mobility and Marginal Alveolar Bone Loss,” Fouad & Marzook (2013)
researched better ways of treating edentulous mandible. This paper is, therefore, a critique of
their research. Specifically, the paper analyzes the research problems, the literature review,
theoretical framework, variables, hypotheses, questions, assumptions, methodology, data
analysis, and the implications and recommendations of the study mentioned above.
According to Fouad & Marzook (2013), one of the most significant challenges that
dentistry faces is “the rehabilitation of edentulous patients.” The authors state in their article that
implant-assisted complete overdenture has always been used to try and reduce the pain and
discomfort that patients face, improve the functions, and also stimulate the patients’
psychological well-being. However, so far only medics only use two implants despite several
recommendations by experts to use more. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to “compare
three design-concepts for mandibular complete overdentures assisted by 4-implants regarding the
implant mobility and marginal alveolar bone loss.” This aim makes the study relevant to the field
of nursing because not only does it help solve a problem that has prevailed for long but also
helps to handle patients better.
As already mentioned above, the main concept explored in the literature review is the use
of two implants in the treatment of mandible issues. In doing so, the authors have used both old

3
references and recent references. The main reason for combining the references is to compare
and track how the issue has been addressed over the years. It provides the opportunity of
knowing what concepts have worked before against those that have not worked. From the
review, the authors were able to arrive at the 4- Implants Assisted Mandibular Complete
Overdentures as an appropriate approach to research since all past studies had suggested the use
of more than two implants.
The study also relied on the occlusion theory, which states that the maxillary and
mandibular should align accurately. This facilitates complete locking of both upper and lower
teeth. This study of implants to the mandible is promoting the theory. The procedures following
the actual installation of the implants are borrowing from other disciplines like with x-rays and
the various measuring instruments. The measurements also borrow from physics in terms of
increasing accuracy levels. There is application of technology within the instruments. The digital
instrument can be manipulated with ease while lessening the risk done by surgery. From this
review, it is thereby evident that the study only used a nursing theory without including other
theories.
Fouad & Marzook (2013) mainly used qualitative methods with observations being the
primary method used to collect data. The study design being Interventional as a clinical trial,
Fouad & Marzook (2013) also used deductive reasoning behind the implants both splinted and
unsplinted. The implants target alignment of the upper and lower jaw to attain proper occlusion.
This will facilitate better chewing of food and also teeth resting properly. The sample size was
15 male patients randomized inclusive ages 55-60. The study set proceeded by one group
received ball abutments on each implant without splinting for retaining an implant retained

4
mandibular over denture. The other group had their implants splinted using Rhein bars with ball
extension for retaining an implanted retained mandibular over denture.
The investigators chose a probability sample as the target was objective to treatment of
the patients and the implants were set to generate multiple results. Especially with the different
age sets. Measurement tools included Osstell device recording numeric value of 1-100 where this
value is referred to as implant stability quotient. There was use of a graduated plastic periodontal
probe which gives distance between gingival margin and the most probable portion in
millimeters insisting on the accuracy. There was use of Apse's modification of Loe~and Silness
index. And lastly there was use of the digital periap...
